Home Comfort Checks – What We Check and How They Could Save You Money!

The comfort of your home is very important. What you might not realize is that keeping your home comfortable and performing regular checks could help save you quite a bit of money. As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we at Royal Heating & Air have a team of experts that can help keep your home healthy and comfortable through the seasons while also saving you money on expensive repairs. Read on to learn more about our Home Comfort Check service and why it could be important to schedule one for your home this fall!

Air Conditioner

With temperatures reaching over 90 degrees for several weeks over the summer, your air conditioner had to work hard this year. You may not need to use it for much longer, but your air conditioner might be able to use some TLC before the cold season so it’s ready to go in the spring. There are a few checks we perform during our Home Comfort Check to make sure your air conditioner is in good condition.

Refrigerant Level

Refrigerant is what your air conditioning unit needs in order to cool your air. If your unit doesn’t have enough, then the air coming out of your system will feel warm and won’t be able to keep your home cool. If the refrigerant level is low, then your air conditioner will have to work overtime and the coils in the system could freeze. Unlike gasoline in a car, refrigerant is not something that gets used up and must be refilled regularly. If your levels are low, that means there is a larger problem present in your air conditioning system, such as a leak. Regularly checking your refrigerant levels can help prevent extensive (and expensive) damage to your system by catching the issue early.

Fan Motor

The fan motor in your air conditioning unit could be considered the most important part of the system. This is the element that propels the cooled air into your home, so without it there can be no active airflow. If dirt builds up around the fan motor, it must work harder to function and can eventually overheat and burn out. Regular maintenance checks can help prevent this from happening and can also help extend the life of your air conditioner.

Heating System

If this winter is anything like last year, your heating system has a lot of work in its future. There are a few checks Royal Heating & Air can perform to help ensure your system is operating efficiently and is prepared for winter.

Heating Elements

Heating elements are tightly wound coils found inside your electric furnace. This is the part of your system that produces heat. While they aren’t particularly complicated, they will wear out over time and need to be replaced. During your Home Comfort Check, a technician from Royal Heating & Air will perform a test with a digital multimeter to check the elements’ functionality.

Gas Furnace Burners

Your gas furnace burners can accumulate rust and dirt throughout their use, which can eventually clog the pipes in your system. In order to properly clean them, the gas furnace burners must be removed, so it is not always an easy do-it-yourself task. Our Lake of the Ozarks HVAC experts at Royal Heating & Air have the proper training and equipment to thoroughly clean your gas furnace burners. Keeping these clean can help avoid costly repairs in the future.

How a Whole-Home Humidifier Could Improve Your Winter

Winter air is notorious for feeling dry... ‘Tis the season for moisturizing! There are a few things you can do, though, to help keep your home comfortable throughout the dry season. One of those things is to call the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks - Royal Heating & Air. We can install a whole-home humidifying system to optimize your health, comfort, and the efficiency and cleanliness of your home. Read on to learn more about whole-home humidifiers and how one could benefit you!

What Are the Negative Effects of Dry Air?

Cold air isn’t drier than warm air on its own. As cold air is warmed up by our heaters, it tends to lose moisture and dry out. That’s why winter feels drier than other seasons - heaters can sap the moisture out of the air. Humidifiers add moisture back into the air but, other than needing less hand lotion, why is that important?

Health Consequences

Dry air can be damaging to your comfort and possibly even your health. When your body is regularly subjected to dry air, your eyes, nose, and throat can all become dehydrated and irritated. Dry eyes feel scratchy and uncomfortable and can make it hard to focus. If your sinuses get dehydrated, they can feel tight and even sore at times. If your nasal passages get too dry, it can be hard for your system to fight bacteria and viruses due to the lack of mucus that captures and disposes of those pathogens. If you suffer from dry coughing and snoring, your throat may be too dry.

Effects on Your Home

Your home can also suffer from dry air. A lack of moisture in the air can cause wooden floors, furniture, and instruments to dry out and crack. This could cause expensive repairs that may have been avoided with the use of a humidifier. Humidified air could also help save on your heating bill in the winter. Moisturized air feels warmer than dry air, so you may not feel the need to turn up the heat as high.

What Kind of Humidifier is Best?

Evaporators, steam vaporizers, and central humidifiers are the most common types of home humidifiers and each one has its own unique method of adding moisture to the air.

Evaporators

Evaporators use a fan to push air through a moistened filter, expelling humidified air into the room. These systems, unfortunately, do not have sensors to let you know when enough moisture has been added to the air and it’s time to turn them off. They are also confined to humidifying one room at a time.

Steam Vaporizers

Steam vaporizers are perhaps one of the most common types of humidifiers. They can be purchased in local drug stores and are relatively affordable. Steam vaporizers function by heating water into a vapor. The vapor is then cooled before the machine expels it into the room like a mist. These humidifiers are also confined to working in one room at a time.

Central Humidifiers

Central humidifiers are whole-home systems installed inside your HVAC ductwork. These function by utilizing the airflow already in your HVAC system, directing the air through a water pad treated with anti-bacterial enzymes and placed in the ductwork. This water pad is moistened directly by a line from your water pipes. The system uses water only as needed and doesn’t have to keep a reserve of water that could grow mildew or mold, and the water pads simply need to be replaced once per year. These systems humidify the whole home evenly for a more balanced and effective result.

Set Up Your Installation Today

Whole-home humidifiers could help improve your air quality, protect valuable wooden items in your home, and possibly even help improve your sense of well-being during the driest season of the year.

To start enjoying the possible benefits of humidified air throughout your home - call the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, Royal Heating & Air!

Waking up in the middle of the night realizing that your air conditioner doesn't work is one of the worst things you could wake up to. I called Tommy and Katie at Royal Heating & Air and let him know about our issue and they had someone out to our house within that day. Our air conditioner is almost 40 years old and they had to give it some extra TLC, but they had it up and running in no time! We highly recommend them!!

~ Lacey D.

We came home from vacation on a Sunday to walk into a house that was 90 degrees. Royal Heating and Air responded within an hour and had the problem fixed within an hour and a half of our phone call. The service was outstanding and reasonably priced! Highly recommend!!!

~ Michelle N.

Highly recommend, I have used Royal for a spring check and clean on my A/C. They were also on-site within an hour on a Friday afternoon last June for an emergency repair while we had guests at our house for the weekend. Heat Pumps: What You May Not Know

Heat pumps tend to get mixed reviews – some people love them, while others prefer different HVAC equipment for their home. As the best HVAC company at Lake of the Ozarks, Royal Heating & Air has the information you need! Read on to learn more about heat pumps, how they work, and how they compare to other systems.

What is a Heat Pump and How Does It Work?

Left to its own devices, heat energy travels from high-temperature areas to low-temperature areas. Heat pumps can reverse this flow and pump heat from low-temperature areas to the area you want to heat. They do this by absorbing heat from the outside air, the ground, or water and transferring it into the home.

Heat Pumps are all-in-one heating and air conditioning systems. They are unique from a traditional furnace in that way – they can also be used for cooling! They reverse the flow and transfer heat from inside the house to the air outside.

What are the Benefits and Drawbacks of a Heat Pump?

A great benefit to using a heat pump is that they are an energy-efficient way to both heat and cool your home. This is because of the way they function, by drawing heat from the environment as a source of renewable energy. Also, having one unit to service instead of both an air conditioner and a furnace could help cut costs over time.

You can also combine a heat pump with a furnace for a hybrid heat system in climates that get below freezing regularly and for long periods of time.

Some drawbacks to a heat pump are that they are working year-round and can wear out more quickly than an air conditioner. Again, heat pumps are doing the job of both the air conditioner and the furnace.

You may also notice that the system seems like it is always running, or that the air coming through the vent does not feel hot. This is because heat pumps provide a more constant flow of warm air over time, keeping your home at a constant temperature.

What Kind of Maintenance Does a Heat Pump Require?

To keep your heat pump happy, there are a few steps you’ll want to take.

Keep the thermostat set at a constant temperature. Frequently changing it could put an extra burden on your unit. If you do change the temperature throughout the day, try to limit it to twice a day. For example, when you leave work and when you return home.

Choose a temperature range that is manageable for your system – above 65 degrees in the summer and below 70 in the winter. Your system may have difficulty keeping up and could cause a frozen coil or condensation in the home in the winter.

Keep your heat pump as clean as possible. Remove snow build-up, ice, and any debris accumulating on or around the unit. Blockages can cause the system to overwork and begin to malfunction.

Schedule regular maintenance with Royal Heating & Air to ensure your heat pump is working efficiently. Your unit should be checked once a year at a minimum. It’s best to have us come out every season to ensure it is ready for the changing temperatures.

Royal Heating & Air Knows Heat Pumps!

Common HVAC Misconceptions You’ve Probably Believed

Your heating and cooling unit is something you rely upon on a regular basis. Whether it’s the heat of the summer or the frigid winter months, you likely have your HVAC running throughout many of the months of the year. With something many rely heavily upon to stay comfortable, there are always tips and myths floating around. As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we’ve heard a lot of things about HVACs that are simply not true. Royal Heating & Air is here to help bust some of those myths in this week’s blog.

Misconception #1: Close vents to save money.

There’s this common misconception that if you close air vents in rooms you hardly use you’ll save money. The truth is, no matter if vents are closed or not, your HVAC system will use the same amount of energy. Closing vents in unused rooms to get more air in used rooms couldn’t be further from the truth. Closing off vents can cause many problems for your HVAC system. Keep in mind that your HVAC system was designed for a certain number of vents and space. In order to keep your HVAC system running as it should, it’s important to keep all vents open.

Misconception #2: A programmable thermostat isn’t worth the money.

This type of thermostat can help you program the temperate you want at different times throughout the day. If you are consistently gone throughout the day during the week, don’t waste energy on keeping your home comfortable. Lowering a few degrees when no one is home can help cut back on your cost, therefore saving you money in the long run.

Misconception #3: The bigger the air conditioner, the cooler your home will be.

The size of the unit does not equate to the level of comfort your home will have. Each home is different, and each home needs a properly sized cooling system. If your unit is too big for your home, not only will your operating costs be higher, the unit won’t function properly. The most common issues with the wrong sized system is frequent cycling on and off, high humidity, and poor distribution.

Misconception #4: Leave ceiling fans on when you leave to cool your home.

A ceiling fan will cool down any bodies in the room, but it won’t actually cool down the room itself. You feel cooler with a ceiling fan on because it is blowing cool air around and it feels cool against your warm skin. Think of it as a cool outdoor breeze. Ceiling fans usually make you feel around 5 degrees cooler, but it won’t do anything for your room once you leave. When you’re home, you can set your thermostat a few degrees higher while running the ceiling fan. When you leave, don’t forget to turn off the ceiling fan to help save on energy costs.

Misconception #5: HVAC maintenance is a waste of time and money.

You invested a lot of money in your HVAC system and it’s extremely important to keep it performing at its best. Having maintenance done on your HVAC system twice a year will help prolong the life of your equipment and it will reduce the need for costly repairs in the future. When your unit is functioning efficiently, it will keep your home comfortable no matter the weather.

As we mentioned, having your HVAC system maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks is an effective way to catch issues before they lead to major repairs. Contact Royal Heating & Air to schedule your routine maintenance today!

3 Reasons to Have Your HVAC System Regularly Maintained

You rely on your air conditioner to keep your home comfortable all summer long. While it may seem like summer is over since Labor Day is past, there’s still plenty of time for warm temperatures. As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we know how important it is to catch any hiccups that may occur with your HVAC unit before it becomes a major issue – like your air conditioner breaking down completely. We offer a unique maintenance service where we come and check out your unit and entire system to make sure it is running in tip top shape. To keep your home comfortable year round, learn why you should schedule your preventative HVAC maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks today!

1) Avoid Major Repairs

Many big HVAC system repairs could be prevented before a major mishap occurs. Don’t get to the point where your home doesn’t have air or heat to call the experts. If you notice a funny sound or your unit not working like it used to, it’s best to have your system checked out. Major repairs can cost major money and it’s best to pay for a small preventative maintenance repair before shelling out for a completely new system install. Help catch an issue before it becomes detrimental to your system.

2) Keep Your Unit Running Smoothly

An efficient system can consume less energy and keep your home comfortable, just like you like it! Preventative maintenance helps ensure your unit is working like it should and is running as smoothly and efficiently as possible. We can check out all the little parts that work together to keep your unit working properly. A minor issue can put strain on other parts of your HVAC unit, which in turn may lead another more major part to fail. Having a professional keep tabs on your unit can help prevent a little issue turning into something big.

3) Ensure Air Filter is in Good Shape

Your air filter is an important part of your system as it traps air particles, hair, and other contaminants from spreading throughout your home. Filters can fill up more quickly than others and finding the right filter for your unique and living conditions is important. A professional can help install the right filter for your specific unit. Keeping your air filter changed out on a regular basis allows more air contaminants to be trapped and the air in your home to be cleaning for you and your family to breathe.

Having your HVAC system maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks should be done two times a year. This can help ensure your unit is running like it should, doesn’t have any potential dangers lurking, and has a fresh air filter for the upcoming season. It’s best to have these maintenance checks performed in the fall and spring to help make sure your unit is ready for the busy winter and summer seasons ahead of the maintenance check. Contact Royal Heat & Air today to schedule your regular HVAC maintenance check! We look forward to providing a reliable system you and your family can count on!

Perks of Using A Smart Thermostat

Home technology is a growing industry and we’re always looking for unique ways to integrate technology in our lives to make things easier. A smart thermostat to control your HVAC system is no different. Here at Royal Heating and Air, we know how beneficial installing a smart thermostat can be. Check out the perks of adding this type of device to your cooling and heating system, below:

Review Energy Use

A smart thermostat allows you to access past energy use. You can better evaluate your use in order to make good HVAC use decisions moving forward. You may also notice a trend in your energy use and if something seems off, you may be able to catch an issue and have it looked at before your system completely goes out.

Control HVAC Remotely

You just left the house for a weekend and forgot to turn your air up to conserve energy. No need to turn around, you can remotely control your system with a smart thermostat. Easily control your entire HVAC system from your phone or other mobile devices.

Keep Tabs On Property

A smart thermostat can give you updates about your property. If your HVAC system is struggling to keep up or has stopped working entirely, you can set your mobile app to notify you if your temp gets above (or below) a certain level. This is extra handy for those second homeowners who may not know something is wrong for weeks or months at a time, without this type of smart device on their property.

Conserve Energy

Save energy when you optimize your HVAC system with a smart thermostat. You can study your energy use over time and see what habits use the least amount of energy. Over time, this can save a lot of extra energy from being spent, therefore saving you money on your monthly electric bill.

Schedule HVAC Use

Setting your system to run when you need it can help ensure your system isn’t overworked when it’s not needed. If you regularly leave the house at the same time each day, setting your air to go up a few degrees throughout the day when no one is home can save you quite a bit of money over the year.

Now that you know some of the perks of installing a smart thermostat in your home, you’re ready to start reaping the rewards of installing this kind of device in your home. If you’re looking for new ways to conserve energy, ensure your heating and cooling system is working like it should with an HVAC maintenance check at the Lake of the Ozarks. Contact the best HVAC repair company near Camdenton, Missouri to schedule your air conditioning checkup. HVAC Maintenance Tips for Pet Owners

Your furry friends are an important part of your family but their fur may lead to issues with your HVAC system. We know your pets hold a special place in your heart and that’s why the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help offer tips for taking better care of your heating and cooling system, if you have pets. Start taking these steps to making sure your HVAC system is working like it should and keeping you and you family (pets included) cool this summer!

Change Air Filter More Often

Air filters help clean the air in your home as the particles get trapped in the filter as the air flows through. If you have pets, you may naturally have more of these particles and hair floating around your home. As a result, your air filters will likely need to be replaced more often. It can also be helpful to use a filter that specializes in filtering in homes with pets.

Remove Access to Wiring

If there is any wire exposed near your HVAC system, it needs to be addressed right away. These loose or broken wires may lead to your system not working efficiently but an also be tempting for your furry friend. A cat may think it’s a fun new toy to bat around with its paws and a dog may think it’s a new chew toy. Either way, a loose wire can be a temptation for your pets which is dangerous for them and your heating and cooling system.

Protect Outdoor Unit

Your exterior unit may seem like an exciting place for your pets to play. This unit can pose a serious danger to your pets. Their paws may get snagged or cut, if your dog or cat tries to pounce on the unit. This can also damage the unit itself, creating the need for immediate maintenance for your unit. In addition, many dogs mark their territory and that can lead to erosion of the condenser unit.

Clean Your Air Ducts

Pet hair is inevitable when you have furry friends running around. It’s best to have your air ducts cleaned on a regular basis because the air ducts are a hot spot for fur and other debris to build up. While a filter can help keep some of this pet debris from circulating around your home, not all particles are filtered out. A thorough cleaning can help reduce the chance of this kind of pet hair and dander from making its way around your home.

Groom Your Pets Outside the Home

Grooming pets can leave a more than normal level of hair and dander behind. Even if you clean up right away, a portion of the debris will get left behind and likely end up in your HVAC system over time. If possible, try to groom and brush your pets outside.

Your furry friends can present challenges for your HVAC system at the Lake of the Ozarks but with the above tips, you can help combat the damage they may cause.
