AC Unit Lagging? Learn What Might be Wrong!

The air has been cooling off over the last few days, but with Missouri, it's likely that we have several sweltering days still in store before the fall season officially arrives. If your air conditioner is having a hard time keeping up with the temperature the thermostat is set for, then it might be time to call Royal Heating & Air. We have several different options we can look into to help make the air conditioning in your home more efficient and comfortable. Keep reading to learn more!

Dirty Air Filter

One of the simplest fixes to a struggling air conditioning unit is to replace the air filter. Air filters need to be regularly replaced, with the timeline depending on the type and thickness of the filter. Check the recommendation on the type of filter you use so that you know exactly when it needs to be replaced. If the filter gets too dirty, then the air flow will be significantly limited. That makes the air conditioning unit have to work hard to pull the air in your home efficiently. If the filter is clean, then it could be a more serious issue that may need attention from a local HVAC technician

Damaged Ductwork

Ductwork is unfortunately not invincible. If your ductwork wasn't put together properly, there could be leaks that are causing air flow inefficiencies. Even if it was installed properly, pests, shifting of the house, and other issues can cause the ducts to move and pull apart which causes issues in the system.

Never Properly Charged

When a new air conditioning unit gets installed, it must be properly connected and charged to work well. Charging a unit isn't like charging a phone, however. Rather than plugging into the wall to get a charge like you'd expect, "charging" means that a technician will properly fill the self-contained unit with refrigerant. This effectively cools the air while it's cycling through the system.

If a technician notices that your refrigerant levels are low, it could be possible that the unit was never charged to the amount it should have been to keep up with your home. Your HVAC technician can recharge the unit and perform regular maintenance to ensure levels are holding steady.

Leaking Refrigerant

If the levels continue to fall after a technician has properly charged it, then it is highly likely that your unit has a leak. This is not a good sign for your air conditioning unit. Refrigerant does not naturally get used up, so if levels are consistently decreasing, you definitely need to call Royal Heating & Air to come out and inspect your unit for leaks.
