Switching to a Heat Pump.

Have you heard that heat pumps could be more effective and efficient, but you're not sure if it's the right choice for you? Royal Heating and Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we have the answers for you! For some, installing a heat pump could make a big positive impact on your energy costs and system efficiency. For others, it might be best to keep their current system. Keep reading to find out which group you're in!

Heat Pumps, Explained

Heat Pumps are all-in-one heating and air conditioning systems. They are unique from a traditional furnace in that way – they can also be used for cooling! Basically, heat pumps transfer heat from one place to another. When they're operating to heat your home, they transfer heat energy from outside (from the air, the ground, or water) to the interior of your home. When a heat pump is operating to cool your home, it's transferring heat from inside your home, circulating it over cooling coils, and blowing the cooled air back into your house (similar to how a traditional air conditioner works).

PROS: Why You SHOULD Get a Heat Pump

A great benefit to using a heat pump is that they are an energy-efficient way to both heat and cool your home. This is because of the way they function, by drawing heat from the environment as a source of renewable energy. Also, having one unit to service instead of both an air conditioner and a furnace could help cut costs over time.

You can also combine a heat pump with a furnace for a hybrid heat system in climates that get below freezing regularly and for long periods of time.

CONS: Why You Might NOT Want a Heat Pump

Some drawbacks to a heat pump are that they are working year-round and can wear out more quickly than an air conditioner. Again, heat pumps are doing the job of both the air conditioner and the furnace.

You may also notice that the system seems like it is always running, or that the air coming through the vent does not feel hot. This is because heat pumps provide a more constant flow of warm air over time, keeping your home at a constant temperature.

Heat Pump Maintenance Info.

To keep your heat pump happy, there are a few steps you’ll want to take...

Keep the thermostat set at a constant temperature. Frequently changing it could put an extra burden on your unit. If you do change the temperature throughout the day, try to limit it to twice a day. For example, when you leave work and when you return home.

Choose a temperature range that is manageable for your system – above 65 degrees in the summer and below 70 in the winter. Your system may have difficulty keeping up and could cause a frozen coil or condensation in the home in the winter.

Keep your heat pump as clean as possible. Remove snow build-up, ice, and any debris accumulating on or around the unit. Blockages can cause the system to overwork and begin to malfunction.

Schedule regular maintenance with Royal Heating & Air to ensure your heat pump is working efficiently. Your unit should be checked once a year at a minimum. It’s best to have us come out every season to ensure it is ready for the changing temperatures.

Pricing for Heat Pumps vs. Traditional Systems

To compare pricing on heat pumps and traditional HVAC systems, you have to consider several factors to know which one will cost you more in the long run. It's not just about upfront cost, it is also about efficiency and what it costs to run each type of unit where you live. Here in Missouri, that can be tricky. If you live somewhere that often has extreme heat and rarely gets below freezing, the heat pump is a no brainer.  But if you have more days below freezing days than above 90 degrees, then a traditional HVAC system may make more sense. In Missouri we get quite a mix. So another consideration is whether you need to replace the heating OR cooling part of your system... Or both. Because a heat pump can work as both a heating and cooling system for your home, it may be more cost-effective (especially in the short-term) to get a heat pump for your home.

Prepping For The Winter Season.

It's time to start preparing your HVAC system for colder weather. Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC Company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we are ready to help you prepare for the season and avoid the common hazards that can come with the Winter weather around your home. Keep reading to learn more and give us a call to schedule your maintenance check!

Carbon Monoxide

Soon the temperatures will cool off and you'll turn on your heater to keep the house warm and toasty. The number one danger of a failing heating system is a carbon monoxide (or CO) leak. This is one of the important reasons why you should schedule heating maintenance early and install carbon monoxide detectors in your home. CO detectors should be installed just like smoke detectors; this means they should be installed in all of the major areas in your home... Preferably on every level of the house and outside of each bedroom. It’s also a good idea to test all of your CO and smoke detectors once a month.

Fire Hazards

Any time you're dealing with a heat source, there is a potential for fire. That is why it's incredibly important to keep your furnace and pipes clear from anything that might catch fire. Make sure there is nothing combustible within 6 inches of your ventilation pipe. Periodically inspect your vent pipes to make sure there is nothing obstructing them, such as leaves, snow, or even bird nests. All fuel-burning systems need ventilation for proper safety. Also maintain a minimum 3-foot clearance around your furnace, fireplace, and other heat sources. Keep the area around heaters unobstructed and free from any flammable items. You should also never store any paint, chemicals, gasoline or any other combustible material anywhere near your furnace.

Frozen Lines

Any lines outside of the house that carry water or condensation need to be drained and protected to prevent freezing and cracking. To prevent your irrigation lines from getting damaged this winter, call your landscaping company before the ground freezes to drain the water. Any residual water left in your irrigation system over the winter season will freeze, expand, and likely cause serious damage to the entire system. It is also a good idea to disconnect and drain the hoses around your house. Also, if you have a high-efficiency furnace, there is likely a condensation line to keep the moisture from puddling around your furnace. If the temperature drops to very cold levels, then this line could freeze all the way back to the furnace and cause it to not be able to kick on. Keep this line insulated away from the cold weather in the fall and winter months.

Tips To Save on Heating This Winter

It is no doubt that many will be facing an inflated utility bill during the upcoming Winter months. We want to help by giving you some helpful tips to make your home's heat usage more efficient. But, if you are concerned your home's heating is seeming to work less than par, we have the best HVAC professionals here to help keep your home comfortable.

Turn Down Your Water Heater

Reducing your water heater's temperature to 120 degrees can save you on water heating costs. Cutting your shower in half can save you up to 30%!

Replace Your Furnace Filter

Clogged debris can make your unit work harder than necessary, raising your energy costs. Make sure to replace the filter and choose to get your furnace inspected by a professional.

Insulate

Don't let your home's warm air draft out through unsealed windows and doors. Make sure you insulate cracks so no cold air gets in through the gaps.

Turn Down The Thermostat

Setting your thermostat to 68 degrees as opposed to 70 -72 in the Winter. Isn't it nice to wear your coziest sweatshirt inside and not get hot?

Close Unused Vents

Close the vents in areas of your home that does not get much traffic. Rooms that don't need heating can be sealed off so the heat gets directed into the more used places in your home.

Turn on The Ceiling Fan

Keeping your fan running clockwise pushes the warm air back into the room.

Use The Sunlight

Use the free sunlight to naturally warm your home. Close the curtain or drapes to keep the heat in when the sun sets.

Light a Candle

This candle trick can tell you if you have an air leak! Light a candle and see if the smoke trails in a specific area of the room. If it does, you likely have an air leak that can be covered with caulk or another sealant.

Getting Your Home Prepared For The COLD.

Tune Up Your Heating System

An HVAC technician can be hired to come over to your home and inspect your heating systems. This is worth it to avoid unnecessary breakdowns on the coldest day of the year. Your HVAC system is an important part of keeping your home safe and comfortable year-round. Royal Heating & Air cares about you and your family, and we're here to give you 5 important steps every homeowner should take to keep their HVAC working properly and stay safe. Keep reading to learn them all!

Fun tip: Reverse your ceiling fans! Studies show that reversing your ceiling fans produces an "updraft" and pushed the hot air down, since hot air rises.

Covering Your AC Unit in the Winter

Having your air conditioner covered during the fall can prevent leaves, yard waste, sticks and other debris from getting stuck inside. During the winter, a cover can protect your unit from falling ice as well. Falling ice can cause a lot of damage to your AC unit that could require costly repairs. Additionally, they prevent water from resting directly on the AC unit's coils and freezing, which could damage them. Overall, a cover helps keep the coils cleaner so the unit runs more efficiently the next time your AC unit is turned on. One thing to keep in mind is that a cover could entice animals to make their shelter in your covered AC unit, away from the cold.

*NOTE: You should only cover an air conditioning unit; do not use a cover if your system is a heat pump. Heat pumps should not be covered.

Prevent Ice Build-Up

Taking steps to prevent ice build-up that can leak into your home and cause potential damage is recommended. Call a weatherization contractor to come over to fix any air leaks and insulation in your home.

Check Your Roof

Look at your roof up close and check for any missing shingles or damaged areas. Better to find it now than during a snowstorm! You can hire a roofing contractor to repair breaks.

Caulking

Gaps may form between the siding and the window or door frames. This can be closed with silicone caulking, as it won't shrink and can stand strong against the cold elements.

Cleaning Your Gutters

Gutters can get clogged if not cleaned. Debris that gets caught in your gutters can lead to water back up that can damage your roof, siding, and trim...leading to the potential of water leaking into your home!

Turn Off Exterior Faucets

Undrained water can freeze up, which will make the pipes burst as the freezing ice expands. Disconnect your hoses, and drain water.

Prepare Your Mower

As your mower sits all winter, fuel that has been left inside can decompose. This is harmful to your mower and will make it harder for you to turn it on in the Spring.

Wait To Prune Until Late-Winter

It is tempting to think about pruning your plants in your landscaping when you see the leaves start turning. But, horticulturalists suggest waiting to prune until late Winter for most plants, just before Spring growth begins.

Call a Chimney Sweep

make sure your fireplace and chimney are clean before using, this can prevent potential chimney fires.

Restock Winter Essentials

Do not wait for the first Winter storm to realize you need more ice melt! Also, ensure you have a durable snow shovel handy.

Schedule HVAC Maintenance Checks

Regular preventative maintenance can not only increase efficiency and lifespan, it also helps you discover and repair things before they lead to bigger problems, more expensive repairs, and potential outages. If you have not had your furnace serviced yet this year, we have HVAC technicians at the Lake of the Ozarks ready to help!

Benefits of a Heat Pump

Royal Heating & Air is comprised of a group of HVAC professionals here to help inform you about heat pumps - how they work, how they could benefit your home, and how we can help install one for you! As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can trust us to bring you the most accurate and helpful information. Keep reading to learn more!

What is a Heat Pump?

Heat Pumps are all-in-one heating and air conditioning systems. They are unique from a traditional furnace in that way – they can also be used for cooling! They reverse the flow and transfer heat from inside the house to the air outside.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Left to its own devices, heat energy travels from high-temperature areas to low-temperature areas. Heat pumps can reverse this flow and pump heat from low-temperature areas to the area you want to heat. They do this by absorbing heat from the outside air, the ground, or water and transferring it into the home.

Heat Pump Maintenance

To keep your heat pump happy, there are a few steps you’ll want to take.

Keep the thermostat set at a constant temperature. Frequently changing it could put an extra burden on your unit. If you do change the temperature throughout the day, try to limit it to twice a day. For example, when you leave work and when you return home.

Pros of a Heat Pump

A great benefit to using a heat pump is that they are an energy-efficient way to both heat and cool your home.
