HVAC Facts That Make You Say, “Wait, What?”

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning can be difficult to understand if you're not an expert. Lucky for you, Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC Company at the Lake of the Ozarks and we're here to help! Keep reading today's blog to learn facts about HVAC systems that you may not know, and that could be costing you money and headaches.

Fans Don't Cool the House

Turning on ceiling and floor fans might make you feel cooler, but it won't actually bring down the temperature in the house. When you're home, you can set the thermostat around five degrees higher with fans on because they make you feel cooler by the air blowing on you. However, if you aren't home then there is no reason to keep fans blowing. It will only cost you energy and blow the same temperature air around the house.

Closing Vents is a Bad Idea

Some people think that closing vents can help save money by not expending energy heating or cooling the room where the vent is located. However, that is not true. Your HVAC system will use the same amount of energy even if the vents are closed. In fact, closing vents can actually cause quite a few problems for the HVAC system. It can make the system have to work harder to try and overcome the blocked off vents and still equalize the temperature in the home. Some of the issues that can come from this are duct leaks, frozen evaporator coils, airflow issues, pressure issues, dead compressors, humidity problems, cracked heat exchange, and more.

Bigger Isn't Always Better

It might be tempting to get a larger air conditioner in order to have a cooler home; however, that won't work. Your unit should be properly sized for the square footage of your home. An over-sized unit will only cause issues for your home including increased humidity, poor airflow and distribution, and frequent cycling on and off which uses a lot more energy than necessary. Be sure to consult with HVAC professionals to get the right sized unit installed in your home.

HVAC Systems Can Last a Long Time

If properly maintained, HVAC systems can actually last 10 to 20 years! Efficiency can start to dwindle at the end of a unit's lifespan. The best way to keep your system running as long as possible, be sure to schedule service checks 1-2 times per year. Scheduling these appointments in spring and fall can be very helpful for your systems as they prepare for the coming winter cold or summer heat.

Silent Dangers Of Carbon Monoxide

Heating your home is essential during the winter, but it is important to understand your HVAC equipment. Your furnace and other household appliances can become dangerous quick if not properly maintained. Carbon monoxide leaks are life-threatening and need to be monitored to keep your family safe this winter. Royal Heating & Air is your locally owned and operated full-service HVAC company at Lake of the Ozarks, and we understand that keeping your home safe is a top priority. Your heating and cooling company at Lake of the Ozarks has a few tips on how to understand and prevent a fatal carbon monoxide leak in your home.

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that is less dense than air. Many furnaces are fuel burning, which can cause a leak of carbon monoxide in your home. Once it enters your home, you are susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning. The carbon monoxide gas can keep you from breathing the oxygen that you need. Many people don't realize they have a leak in their home, and since it doesn't have an odor, many times your symptoms are the only clue you have a problem.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning?

  • A dull headache
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Confusion
  • Blurred Vision
  • Loss of consciousness

How can I prevent a carbon monoxide leak in my home?

One of the most important measures you can take to prevent a carbon monoxide leak is regular maintenance. We recommend having your HVAC unit checked every Spring and Fall to make sure your equipment is operating efficiently without leaks. Regular maintenance is a great way to catch any leaks before they become fatal. It is also recommended to have your fireplace inspected every year. Your fireplace is a source of a potential leak. If your chimney has a blocked flue it can block carbon monoxide from escaping, causing your home to have dangerous levels. You can also install a carbon monoxide detector in your home. Detectors are a great tool to use in addition to regular inspections. Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed on every floor of your home at least five feet off the ground. If possible install one near every sleeping area.

How do I know if my home is leaking carbon monoxide?

If you are unsure if your home has a carbon monoxide leak, we recommend you leave your home immediately. If you have severe symptoms, call 911. If you are not having symptoms but suspect you may have a leak, you can give us a call. We can come inspect your equipment to ensure it is operating correctly. If you notice stains, soot or discoloration on or around your boiler, fireplace or water heater, call us. It could be signs you have a leak. Check your boiler or any other area that has a gas flame. If it normally burns blue and the flame is now yellow or orange, you could have a carbon monoxide leak.

Staying ahead of a leak is crucial. It is a silent killer. Regular inspections and paying attention to your equipment can help stay away of any potential dangers in your home. If you want peace of mind, give us a call and we are happy to look over your HVAC equipment to make sure it is running properly.

It's Not Too Early To Get Ready For Winter

Summer is sticking around for one more month, but it's never too early to get a jump start on prepping your home for the cold winter season. Royal Heating & Air wants to make sure you stay toasty warm during the cold months, so we've put together a list of things you can do to help.

1. Make sure your home is properly insulated.

Without proper insulation, it will be harder for your home to keep cool or warm. While your HVAC system is hard at work, if your home isn't properly insulated, it will continue to work even when it doesn't need too. The heat can escape from your home, and to make up for the heat loss, your furnace will continue to run. With proper insulation, your home can stay nice and warm all winter long, without overworking your furnace.

2. Seal up your home's windows and door frames.

Just like with improper insulation, not having your windows and doors sealed could let out precious warm air. Take the time to walk around your home and make sure all windows are sealed up. If you feel outside air around your windows, take silicon chaulk and seal up any openings. It's also important to check around door frames and make sure that the weather stripping on the bottom of the door is in tack.

3. Go outside and check your property.

During the winter months, the Lake area can experience some harsh weather. Make sure nothing gets damaged, like your AC unit, by taking a walk around the outside of your home and clear away any dead branches from the trees.

4. Make sure your chimney is clean.

Alternate heat sources are a great way to give your furnace a little break during the cold winter season. However, you have to take precaution when using these alternate heat sources. If your home has a fireplace, it's a great way to get a little cozy. However, it's important to make sure you get it cleaned regularly. It's recommended to clean your fireplace twice a year for health and safety reasons. It will help reduce allergens in your home and prevent your flue from being clogged.

5. Check the thermostat.

Now that summer is winding down, it's a good time to check that the thermostat is working properly on the heat setting. During a cooler night, take the time to switch the thermostat from cool to heat to ensure it kicks on. While doing this, it's also a good idea to check the air filter and change it as necessary.

6. Reverse your ceiling fans.

During the summer, it's recommended to set the ceiling fans to rotate counter clockwise to blow the air straight down. However, in the winter months, it's best to have the ceiling fan rotating clockwise. You may think that having the ceiling fan at all would be counterintuitive. However, heat rises, so when it's set to counter clockwise on a low setting, it can push the warm air away from the ceiling and down into the room.

7. Get your HVAC system serviced.

Although the furnace may have kicked on and seemed like everything is fine, it still needs to be looked at by a professional Lake of the Ozarks HVAC technician. It's always best to have your furnace serviced by a professional before the start of the season to ensure there is no underlying issue that could be overlooked.

Although we don't want to think about it, summer is slowly winding down. Royal Heating & Air wants to make sure you stay toasty warm all winter long. Give us a call at today to get your fall service check scheduled today!

Protect Your AC From The Summer Heat

With temperatures nearing the 100s, AC units will be humming along all over the Lake area. We want to make sure the summer heat doesn't make your AC unit overwork. If your AC unit isn't performing efficiently, the extreme heat may cause it to overwork. Luckily, with just a few simple steps, we can help you beat the heat and keep your AC from overworking and running more efficiently.

1. Check the Filters

It's best to check the air filters once a month and change as necessary. Replacing the air filter is one of the easiest and most effective methods of conserving energy and saving money on your energy bills. It's a critical step in maintaining your system. It's important to regularly change the filter, as they get clogged with dust and other contaminants. If your filter becomes clogged, your system will have to work harder to supply the same amount of cool air. In addition, a dirty filter can cause cold air to get caught in the system, which can cause it to freeze up and stop working.

2. Keep AC Unit in the Shade

Making sure your AC unit is in a shaded area can help make it run more efficiently. Air in shaded spaces is cooler, which means that the AC unit will have an easier time cooling the air.

3. Don't Keep Thermostat in Heat

It's important to keep the thermostat away from heat producing appliances like lamps and TV sets. The thermostat would sense the heat coming off these appliances, which would cause the AC unit to run longer than necessary. When installing the thermostat, be thoughtful of the location. If it's placed near a window, the sun might shine on it also causing the AC unit to run longer.

4. Is it Time To Upgrade?

If your AC unit is over ten years old, it may not be very efficient in keeping your home at a comfortable temperature. Newer models are much more energy efficient and can keep your home comfortable no matter the temperature outside. If you have decided to replace your current AC unit, it's important to make sure it's the right size for your home. If your AC is too large for your home, it will cycle on and off more frequently, which will reduce the efficiency of the system.

5. Seal It Up

Make sure the cold air stays inside by properly insulating your home. In addition to ensuring there is enough insulation in the attic and around the air ducts, seal up any cracks and crevices around the windows and door frames with caulking. If your home is not weatherized, you could be wasting precious cold air during the summer months, which could make your AC unit work harder to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

6. Call An HVAC Professional

The best way to make sure your AC unit is prepared for the summer heat is to have a professional Lake of the Ozarks HVAC technician take a look at your system. Royal Heating & Air can ensure that your system is prepared for even the hottest of days. Call us today at 573-480-4313 to schedule your service appointment.

5 Tips To Lowering Cooling Costs This Summer

Summer is full of vacations, pool days, relaxation and, of course, hot and humid days. After a fun day out in the sun, we want to come home to a nice, cool home. However, sometimes we don't like the costs associated with cooling our homes. If you're wanting a little extra spending money this summer, Royal Heating & Air has 5 tips to help you reduce your cooling costs this season.

1. Avoid Heat Build Up

When the outdoor temperature exceeds the temperature inside, try to avoid activities that generate heat like cooking, using the dishwasher and using the dryer. Instead of using the oven, or cooking on the stovetop, try grilling outside. You can avoid using the dishwasher by hand washing dishes or letting your clothes air dry instead of turning on the dryer. Or instead of doing these activities during the peak of the heat, try saving these activities for when the sun goes down or the temperature drops.

2. Use Your Ceiling Fans

Using ceiling fans could help you feel about 6 degrees cooler via the wind-chill effect. Although a fan doesn't cool a room, it just makes it more comfortable to be in. When combined with the air conditioner, the ceiling fan can help disperse cooled air more efficiently and allow you to lower the thermostat a bit with little or no discomfort. However, just remember to turn off the fan when no one's in the room to enjoy it, as it's just wasting electricity.

3. Close Blinds & Curtains

Whatever your window treatments are, you'll see a difference in your cooling cost when you keep them drawn during the day. Try using light-colored treatments to deflect the sun's scorching rays. Hang shades as close to windowpanes as possible, as this enables them to also block outdoor heat from radiating inside.

4. Be More Energy Efficient

Installing a programmable thermostat can help your system become more energy efficient. It's best to increase the temperature by a couple of degrees when you're not home, or when you're asleep to help with your cooling cost during the summer. When coming home to a hot house, don't set your thermostat colder than you want to cool your home, as this doesn't cool your home faster.

5. Get AC Unit Serviced

It's not enough to install a programmable thermostat. If you don't properly care for you AC unit, it won't help reduce your cooling cost. In fact, if there is something wrong with your AC unit, it could cost you more. Dirty air filters block airflow and could make your unit work harder to cool your home. In addition, ensure registers aren't blocked by dust or furniture. It's best to have a professional Lake of the Ozarks HVAC technician look at your system to ensure everything is in proper working condition.

Royal Heating & Air can ensure your HVAC system is ready for the summer season. Call the best heating and cooling company at the Lake of the Ozarks at 573-480-4313. We can take a look at your AC unit and make sure it's running efficiently to make sure you stay cool even during the hottest of days.

Tips On Preparing Your HVAC System For Summer Vacation

Summer is gearing up and people are packing their bags getting ready for their vacations. However, there is an important part of getting ready for a vacation that often gets overlooked - the HVAC system.  Your Lake of the Ozarks heating and cooling company has a few tips on how to get your HVAC system ready for your vacation.

1. Check The Air Filter

It's best to check the air filter at least once a month and change it as necessary. It's important to check the air filter before you leave for an extended period of time. When filters are clogged with debris, airflow is restricted, which causes your AC unit to work harder to cool your home. When you're away, you can't notice the signs of restricted airflow, which includes:

- HVAC system running more often or for longer periods of time
- Loud noises
- Warm air being supplied from the vents
- Excessive build-up of dust and dirt

2. Adjust The Thermostat

Contrary to popular belief, you should run your AC while you're away. When the HVAC doesn't engage for long periods of time, your home is susceptible to moisture buildup and mold development. The HVAC system is designed to run regularly, so when it doesn't engage for long periods of time, it can actually damage your equipment and shorten its lifespan. When you're away, raise the thermostat no more than 5 degrees. A programmable thermostat can help you maximize efficiency even while you're away.

3. Check The Outside Unit

Before leaving, it's important to make sure the outside unit is taken care of. Ensure there is no debris around the outside unit that would restrict airflow. In addition, make sure nearby shrubbery is well trimmed and clear of any leaves, limbs or grass clippings from your HVAC system. While clearing away any debris, take the time to ensure your outside unit is not damaged or leaking. If any issues are spotted, contact a professional HVAC repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks. If the issues go without repair, it could make them worse, and you don't want to return from vacation to a catastrophic HVAC failure.

4. Be Prepared For Storms

Thunderstorms are a common occurrence in the Midwest during the summer months, so make sure your home is prepared for any that may pop up before you leave for your trip. If there are any low hanging limbs or unsecured structures near your home or AC unit, have them removed before you leave. Although you can't control nature, it's important to be prepared and do what you can to avoid returning home to a storm damaged HVAC system.

5. Close The Windows & Curtains

Before taking off, ensure all the windows are closed not only for safety, but also to help with energy efficiency. In addition, ensure the windows and door frames are sealed up to ensure the cool air stays in while you're away. Closing curtains and blinds will help regulate the temperature of your home while on vacation.

6. Open The Vents

HVAC systems are designed to maximize airflow, so even in rooms that are seldom used should have the vents open. Before leaving on vacation, check every room to ensure all the vents are open.

7. Vacuum Your Home

While you're away, dust and allergens will collect, so it's important for your home's air quality to vacuum before leaving for vacation.

The best way to make sure your HVAC system is ready for your vacation is to call Royal Heating & Air at 573-480-4313. Our expert technicians can take a look at your HVAC system and make sure there are no issues. We want to ensure you don't come home to any surprises involving your HVAC system.

HVAC Maintenance Tips Pet Owners Should Know

For many of us, pets have become a part of our family. They bring us joy, unconditional love and companionship. As pet owners, we have taken on a responsibility of providing them with a safe and loving home. This means feeding them healthy meals, giving them delicious treats and providing them with enough exercise. In addition, owning a pet also requires putting in a little more work when it comes to your home's HVAC maintenance. Your Lake of the Ozarks HVAC repair company has a few tips to help keep your HVAC system happy as well as your pets.

Keep Your Pets Clean

Bathing your pets regularly can go a long way in improving the quality of your home's air. Pet dander is one of the major causes of allergies, so it's important to regularly pick up pet hair, as well as bath and groom your pets. Pet dander can be recirculated throughout your air ducts causing a perpetual problem.

Check The Air Filters

It's important to regularly pick up pet hair, as they can quickly clog up the air filter. The air filter's job is to remove dust particles and other contaminants from the air. However, once the air filter gets too dirty and clogged, it can't do its job, which could make the HVAC system overwork. It's no secret that dogs and cats shed a lot, so it's important to check the filter once a month and change them as necessary. If your home has pets, you may need to change the air filter more often.

Use The Right Air Filters

Air filters have an important job of keeping the air in your home clean, so you want to make sure you use the appropriate filters for your HVAC system. There are many different air filters to choose from, including some that are designed for homes with pets. If you're unsure about which filter is best for your home, contact a professional HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Check For Loose Wires

There are lots of parts that make your HVAC system work properly, including a lot of wires. These wires, if exposed, could look like a fun toy to a kitten or puppy, which could be a recipe for disaster. It's important to take a good look at your system and make sure there isn't anything that they could get to.

Keep Outside Unit Enclosed

If your dog is able to free roam your yard, this could pose a number of problems not only for the outside unit, but to your furry friend as well. Dogs could scratch the condenser's fans with their claws, which could injure your pup and cause issues for the condenser unit. In addition, if your dog decides to mark the condenser unit, the urine could lead to refrigerant leaks or corrosion in the unit.

Have The Air Ducts Cleaned

It's best to have your air ducts professionally cleaned at least once a year, however, if you have pets, you may need to do this more often.  Because the air ducts take the air from the HVAC system and transport it throughout your home, you want to ensure it's transporting clean air throughout your house. If the ducts in your home are dirty with pet hair and dander, then it will just continually be circulated throughout your home.

Seal The Air Ducts

If the air ducts in your home have gaps and cracks, it gives pet hair and dander an easy access to your ducts. As mentioned earlier, when your air ducts are filled with pet hair and dander, it will be continuously circulated through the air in your home. Sealing the ducts will remedy those gaps and cracks and keep debris from entering the ductwork.

At Royal Heating & Air, we want to make sure your heating and cooling system is working efficiently to keep your family (including our furry family members) comfortable. To schedule an appointment with one of our expert HVAC technicians at the Lake of the Ozarks, call 573-480-4313.

HVAC Tips For Christmas

It's that time of the year when the heating and venting aspects of your HVAC unit has a big job, which is to keep you warm and toasty so you can enjoy your eggnog in comfort. Ensuring your HVAC system is in excellent condition for the holidays is important whether you are hosting a big holiday party or enjoying the day with your family spending time with each other. Royal Heating & Air wants to make sure your home is ready for Christmas no matter your plans. Here are five HVAC tips brought to you by the best heating and cooling company at the Lake of the Ozarks.

- Change out the air filter. It is important to check the air filter one a month and change as necessary. A clogged and dirty filter can overwork your HVAC system, which could make it difficult to pump out more heat. A severely clogged filter could even become a fire hazard.

- Be aware of the vents. Vents should never be covered, even if they're located beneath windows where drapes and couches are regularly placed. When moving furniture around to make room for Christmas decorations or for holiday parties, be aware of floor, wall and ceiling vents, and not to block any of them.

- Clean up needles. Pine needles can make their way just about anywhere, including the vents. Clean up daily around your Christmas tree if and when needles start to drop. That is the best way to keep your home tidy and pine needles out of your vents.

- Find a safe place for your tree. It is important to find a place for your tree that is far away from any heating source. Putting a tree too close to a heat source not only dries out the tree faster, it's also a fire risk.

- Make use of alternative heating sources. Make your home nice and toasty by using alternative heat sources to give your HVAC system a bit of a break. If you have a fireplace, get cozy and make good use of it. Test out new holiday cookie recipes and use the stove top and oven to create some heat while also filling up on delicious holiday treats.

Merry Christmas From Royal Heating & Air

Happy Holidays from Lake of the Ozarks' best HVAC repair company! If your home isn't feeling cozy this holiday season, call Royal Heating & Air at 573-480-4313. With the cold winter season in full swing, it is important to keep our furnaces in tip top shape. Is Your Furnace Not Working? Try These 5 Simple Fixes!

It's almost that time of the year. The weather is getting a bit chilly and you may be thinking of turning on your heater soon. However, what happens when it doesn't kick on? It is a good idea to test your furnace out before it gets too cold. This will allow you to see if there is anything wrong with it and allow you enough time to fix it before you actually need it. Before calling the best furnace repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks, try these simple fixes.

1. Check The Thermostat

Make sure that the settings on the thermostat are correct. It may seem simple, but make sure that it is switched to heat. Check the furnace against the room temperature by setting the thermostat to a higher temperature and see if that makes the furnace turn on. Double check the display settings including the time and date, as this could affect the programmable settings.

2. Check The Pilot Light

There are many reasons why a pilot light could go out including a strong draft. A burnt out pilot light is one of the most common reasons why a furnace won't turn on or stops working. If your pilot light won't relight, you may have lost gas to your home. Check to make sure the gas valve is open. Double check that you have hot water and if you have a gas stove, double check that it works.  If your pilot light relights, but won't stay lit, you may have another issue and it is time to call Royal Heating & Air

3. Check Furnace Filters

Just like with your AC, a clean filter is vital to the life of your furnace. Some homes have separate filters for the AC and furnace, so make sure both are nice and clean before using them. A dirty furnace filter is not only important to maintaining your furnace, it is also important to your health. A dirty filter can not only lead to asthma, but it could also cause colds and other cold weather health issues.

4. Check The Air Ducts

If your furnace is turning on, but not heating up well, you may need to check the air ducts. Leaks can cause your furnace to not work as efficiently, which is bad for your comfort and your wallet. If you feel comfortable checking the air ducts yourself, go for it! If you need help, call the best HVAC repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks. We can help you seal up your air ducts, making sure you feel comfortable all winter long.

5. Check The Blower Panel

If the blower panel is not closed properly, your furnace will not work. A safety device will prevent the furnace from turning on, which will leave you feeling chilly and wondering what is going on with your furnace. If the blower panel was recently opened, double check to make sure it was properly closed. If it is not pressed in all the way or crooked, the furnace will continue to not work.

When In Doubt, Call Royal Heating & Air

If you have checked everything and are still having issues with your furnace, it is time to call a Lake of the Ozarks professional furnace repair company. When you call Royal Heating & Air to fix your furnace, you will be feeling comfortable in your home in no time! To schedule your appointment, call 573-480-4313 today!

5 Tips To Make Your HVAC System Last Longer

Purchasing an HVAC unit is a big investment, so of course, you will want it to last as long as possible. There are many factors that go into how long an HVAC system will last, including regular maintenance, usage and quality of the unit. A Lake of the Ozarks professional HVAC repair company can help prevent breakdowns as well as fix any issues that arise. Royal Heating & Air has five tips to make your HVAC system last longer.

1. Quality Unit

You get what you pay for when it comes to purchasing an HVAC system. When a unit is made with high-quality materials, it will naturally last longer. In addition, many higher quality brand units come with manufacturer warranties as well. A unit made with poor quality materials may wear out quickly. Save yourself the hassle and invest in quality HVAC system.

2. Replace Filters

Air filters filter particles during air intake and keep these materials from clogging up your HVAC system. Changing these filters are an easy way to make sure your unit is running smoothly. It is a good idea to check them once a month and change them as necessary. If you have pets, you may need to change them more often. A dirty filter can lead to costly repairs.

3. Clean Air Ducts

Air travels through your home through air ducts. The passageways to and from your HVAC system can get dusty, which can cause your unit to work harder to intake and deliver cool air through your home. If you schedule regular duct cleaning, your unit could benefit greatly.

4. Clean Air Vents

Air vents naturally get dusty and dirty. Regular cleaning is important, not only for the functionality of your unit but also for the health of your family. When air vents are dusty, your HVAC system has to work harder to push air through them. In addition, clean vents also help with the indoor air quality, which helps eliminate airborne allergies.

5. Regular Maintenance

Scheduling inspections as well as performing regular maintenance is an importance factor in the life of your HVAC system. Regular maintenance can prevent costly breakdowns and keep your unit running smoothly. It is a good idea to have your unit checked out twice a year - once in the spring and again in the fall. This is a good time to have your united looked over, as you are switching from heat to cooling.
