Fall Furnace Safety Tips

The weather is starting to cool down and fall is officially here. Each season, there are different things homeowners need to do in order to ensure safety and comfort in their home. Royal Heating & Air is here to help you with these tasks. Now is the time to review furnace safety tips provided by the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks. These tips will help ensure that your home will be safe and cozy this fall and winter.

Fall Furnace Safety Tips

Your heating and cooling system should be checked twice a year. Once in the spring before the heat of summer, and once in the fall before the cold of winter. Heating systems, such as fireplaces and furnaces that aren’t routinely checked are not only inefficient, but they can be dangerous as well. The older your HVAC system, the more important routine checks are. Make sure your home is safe this fall and winter with these tips!

Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home and outside of each bedroom.
The number one danger of a failing heating system is a carbon monoxide leak. This is one reason why you should schedule heating maintenance early. CO detectors should be installed just like smoke detectors; this means they should be installed in all of the major areas in your home. It’s also a good idea to test all of your CO and smoke detectors once a month.

Make sure there is nothing combustible within 6 inches of your ventilation pipe.
Periodically inspect your vent pipes to make sure there is nothing obstructing them, such as leaves, snow, or even bird nests. All fuel-burning systems need ventilation for proper safety.

Maintain a minimum 3-foot clearance around your furnace, fireplace, and other heat sources.
Keep the area around heaters unobstructed and free from any flammable items. You should also never store any paint, chemicals, gasoline or any other combustible material anywhere near your furnace.

Change your air filters regularly.
Dirty filters are hard on your system.  A system that is overworked will not run effectively, which could cause potential risk to your home.  You want to make sure to change your filter often to prevent future damage to your unit which could be dangerous.

Schedule Fall maintenance to be performed on your unit.
When it comes to maintenance, we can help.  You can keep your system running with simple upkeep tasks but to make sure it is running safely, it is always best to have your system inspected by a professional.  Keep your family safe this year and make sure your unit is ready for the colder months.

Royal Heating & Air knows that annual professional maintenance will ensure that your home is safe and cozy this fall and winter. The furnace safety tips above are a great way to get ready for the colder weather.  From preventative maintenance to installations, the best HVAC company in Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you. Call 573-480-4313 to schedule an appointment today!

18th Annual Eagle Days

It’s that time of year again! Make sure you grab your coats, hats, and gloves for one of the most popular winter events at the Lake of the Ozarks! Eagle Days will return for its 18th year at the Lake on Saturday, January 6th and Sunday, January 7th, 2018. This fun, free community event is a wonderful opportunity to view and learn about eagles and Royal Heating & Air is a proud sponsor for this year's event. The best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks has all the information you need for this incredible winter event.

Missouri is one of the leading states to spot our national bird, the bald eagle. Eagles make nests wherever they can find food and open water, which is why the Lake of the Ozarks is so attractive to these birds. If you would like to see a few up close and personal, then you should make plans to attend the 18th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Eagle Days.

The very first Eagle Days at the Lake, which was held in 1999, attracted 651 participants. Last year, over 3,700 people attended, which made it one of the most successful Eagle Days to date. This year's event will feature many fun activities, which include:
  • Wild eagle viewing & program
  • Owl, hawk and turkey vulture programs
  • Coloring contest
  • Photo contest
  • Other activities for kids

There is something for everyone at this year's event. There will even be live eagles from the World Bird Sanctuary with naturalists on hand to answer any question you may have about them. This exciting event will be taking place at Osage National Golf Course.

Everyone is encouraged to bring their binoculars to spot wild eagles. Willmore Lodge and below the Bagnell Dam on the Osage River are both excellent spots for bird-watching. Bring your camera too, as you will be able to get some beautiful photos of these birds during the live presentations. If you're lucky, you may even be able to capture some great pictures of them in the wild.

You can view a full Eagle Days schedule of events on their website at www.LakeOfTheOzarksEagleDays.com. You can also find the photo contest rules, download the picture for the coloring contest and if you want to get involved, the application to volunteer for this year's event. Furnace 101

Now that the cold weather is here, it’s important to learn a thing or two about the magical machine that will provide our homes with heat and comfort during the long and cold winter days. The more you know about a furnace and how it works, the better you can troubleshoot it if something were to go wrong. Royal Heating & Air knows that understanding how your furnace works will help you troubleshoot your furnace and potentially avoid an expensive HVAC service call. While you may be able to quickly solve the problem on your own, sometimes you need your Lake of the Ozarks HVAC company to come fix the problem for you.

Welcome to Furnace 101

What is a Furnace?
The most common type of furnace is a gas-powered central air system. This means that air is heated in one area and is then distributed throughout the house through ductwork and vents. The main parts of your furnace are the control system (thermostat and electrical controls), gas valve, burners, heat exchanger, and duct and ventilation system.

Thermostat and Gas Valve
Your furnace starts working when it receives a signal from the thermostat that tells it to turn on. Depending on the temperature you choose, when the thermostat detects the air temperature dropping below the selected temperature, it activates the furnace. When the thermostat sends the signal to the furnace, the furnace gas valve opens and ignites the burner component beneath the combustion chamber. The gas valve and the thermostat work together to regulate the amount of gas that flows into your furnace.

If your gas valve is working fine, but the furnace isn’t turning on, check to make sure your pilot light is on. If your pilot light is out, you should refer to your manufacturer instructions or contact the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Heat Moves to Heat Exchanger
The flames from the burner component heat a metal exchanger. The heat circulates through the looped tubes of the heat exchanger, transferring the heat to air. This is a crucial step. If it’s not working, you won’t have any heat. A heat exchanger can also be dangerous if they develop any cracks or leaks. An efficient and well-maintained heat exchanger is essential for a working furnace. Combustion gases should be venting out of the house safely during the process of heating the heat exchanger.

Blower and Fan
As the heat circulates through the heat exchanger, the blower motor and fan moves the heat through the plenum and then through the rest of the ductwork in your home. That heat then flows through the vents in each room, which provide your home with warm air. Once enough heat has been generated, the thermostat will send a signal to turn off the furnace.

When there is a problem with your furnace, it is more than likely the control system, heat source, or the distribution system. No matter the problem, your Lake of the Ozarks HVAC company will be able to take care of it.

The best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks understands how important it is to keep your home warm and comfortable during the winter months. Hopefully, with a little understanding of how your furnace system works, you will be able to troubleshoot the problem yourself or know early on that you need to give Royal Heating & Air a call. Don’t forget, annual fall furnace maintenance is important to keep your system running smoothly. If you haven’t yet, schedule yours today!

Get The Most Out Of Your Heating System This Winter

As the weather starts to get colder, we are reminded that winter is right around the corner. Chances are, your heating system gets a lot of use during the winter time. It’s important to keep your home cozy and comfortable as the temperatures continue to drop. Royal Heating & Air knows that a reliable furnace is vital during the winter months and it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg to keep your house warm. The best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks has some steps you can take to maximize your heater’s efficiency. These tips will help drop your costs all while delivering the heat you want.

Schedule Professional Heating Maintenance

It’s important to schedule routine maintenance as soon as the summer comes to an end. During the warmer months when you don’t use your heater, it’s possible that dust and dirt have built up. Worn parts probably haven’t been replaced since the previous winter. A heating tune-up from your Lake of the Ozarks HVAC company can help fix all of the little problems, this helps reduce the strain on your heating system and lowers the amount of energy it uses to warm your home. When you get routine maintenance, your technician will also make sure dangerous combustions gases, such as carbon monoxide, are safely venting outside.

Change Filters and Bleed Radiator

You should set a reminder to check your air filter every 30 days. You shouldn’t wait more than 90 days to clean or replace it. When you put in a new filter, it’s a good idea to write the date of replacement on the filter itself so you know how long it’s been since you last replaced it. By regularly changing your filter, you will not only improve your home’s indoor air quality, but you will help reduce the strain on your HVAC system. You should also make sure that your vents are open and unobstructed.

If you have a radiator, don’t forget to “bleed” them at the beginning of every heating season. As soon as water starts coming out, close the valve and move on to the next one.

Seal Common Air Leaks

Seal common air leaks around your home to keep your heat inside. You’re not wanting to heat the whole neighborhood after all. The most common air leaks are usually found around windows and doors. The more air leaks you have, the harder and longer your heaters has to work to heat your house. The more your house is sealed, the warmer your house will stay.

Carbon Monoxide and Fire Protection

Besides scheduling your fall furnace maintenance, it’s important to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every 30 days to make sure they are working properly. Home fires and carbon monoxide poisoning increases during the colder months when we are constantly running our heating systems. You should have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of your home and outside every sleeping area.
Also, if you have a fireplace and chimney, don’t forget to get it inspected and cleaned every year. Creosote buildup in a chimney is a common cause of a home fire.

Consider Upgrades

Consider adding upgrades to your system to increase it’s efficiency as well as it’s versatility. If you have an older thermostat, you could replace it with a programmable or smart thermostat. You could also consider a zone control system. A zone control system lets you tailor the temperature to different areas of your home. This allows you to heat the parts of the house that you are in while leaving the rest be, this means the heater uses less energy. Fans can help you feel warmer by pushing the hot air that’s near the ceiling down to the living spaces below.

Royal Heating & Air wants you to know that high energy bills and discomfort don’t have to be part of the winter season. With a little planning, you can help reduce costs without decreasing the level of comfort in your home. If your furnace is needing fall maintenance or a tune-up, give the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks a call.

All About Heat Pumps!

Heat pumps are an efficient way to heat and cool your home. Your Lake of the Ozarks heating and cooling company can help you keep your house warm all winter long by installing a heat pump in your home. Royal Heating & Air takes a closer look at how heat pumps work and the different types available.

How Heat Pumps Work

A heat pump is a system that can be reversed to either heat or cool a controlled space. They usually consist of two parts: an indoor unit called an air handler and an outdoor unit, similar to a central air conditioner, that's referred to as the heat pump. A compressor circulates refrigerant that absorbs and releases heat as it travels between the indoor and outdoor units. Like your refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to move heat around your home. During the winter months, the heat pump will extract heat from the cool outdoors and transfer it inside to warm your home. During the summer months, it will reverse the direction and remove the heat from your home to cool it down. Because they transfer heat rather than generate it, heat pumps can be a cheaper alternative than conventional heating or cooling appliances.

Types of Heat Pumps

There are several types of heat pumps, but the two most common are the air-to-air and the geothermal. They collect heat from either the air or the ground and they concentrate it for use inside to either heat or cool your home.

Bryant Heat Pumps

Is Your Furnace Not Working? Try These 5 Simple Fixes!

It's almost that time of the year. The weather is getting a bit chilly and you may be thinking of turning on your heater soon. However, what happens when it doesn't kick on? It is a good idea to test your furnace out before it gets too cold. This will allow you to see if there is anything wrong with it and allow you enough time to fix it before you actually need it. Before calling the best furnace repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks, try these simple fixes.

1. Check The Thermostat

Make sure that the settings on the thermostat are correct. It may seem simple, but make sure that it is switched to heat. Check the furnace against the room temperature by setting the thermostat to a higher temperature and see if that makes the furnace turn on. Double check the display settings including the time and date, as this could affect the programmable settings.

2. Check The Pilot Light

There are many reasons why a pilot light could go out including a strong draft. A burnt out pilot light is one of the most common reasons why a furnace won't turn on or stops working. If your pilot light won't relight, you may have lost gas to your home. Check to make sure the gas valve is open. Double check that you have hot water and if you have a gas stove, double check that it works.  If your pilot light relights, but won't stay lit, you may have another issue and it is time to call Royal Heating & Air

3. Check Furnace Filters

Just like with your AC, a clean filter is vital to the life of your furnace. Some homes have separate filters for the AC and furnace, so make sure both are nice and clean before using them. A dirty furnace filter is not only important to maintaining your furnace, it is also important to your health. A dirty filter can not only lead to asthma, but it could also cause colds and other cold weather health issues.

4. Check The Air Ducts

If your furnace is turning on, but not heating up well, you may need to check the air ducts. Leaks can cause your furnace to not work as efficiently, which is bad for your comfort and your wallet. If you feel comfortable checking the air ducts yourself, go for it! If you need help, call the best HVAC repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks. We can help you seal up your air ducts, making sure you feel comfortable all winter long.

5. Check The Blower Panel

If the blower panel is not closed properly, your furnace will not work. A safety device will prevent the furnace from turning on, which will leave you feeling chilly and wondering what is going on with your furnace. If the blower panel was recently opened, double check to make sure it was properly closed. If it is not pressed in all the way or crooked, the furnace will continue to not work.

When In Doubt, Call Royal Heating & Air

If you have checked everything and are still having issues with your furnace, it is time to call a Lake of the Ozarks professional furnace repair company. When you call Royal Heating & Air to fix your furnace, you will be feeling comfortable in your home in no time! To schedule your appointment, call 573-480-4313 today!
