AC Unit Not Working? Simple Fixes to Try BEFORE Calling a Professional

It is now mid-summer, and you are probably running your air conditioner frequently.  The last thing you want to deal with during the heat of summer at the Lake of the Ozarks is a broken AC unit.  Before you call the best AC repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks, you may want to try a few simple fixes.  Royal Heating & Air has created a list of things you can try BEFORE calling a professional if your AC isn’t working properly this summer.

1. Is there Electrical Power to the House?

This may sound silly, but before bringing in a professional, make sure you double-check that all electrical is working properly in your home.  You would hate to call in your local HVAC company just to find out that the house or even neighborhood is temporarily lacking power.

2. Replace Broken Fuses

Along the same lines as checking electrical power, check if you have any broken fuses.  Broken or blown fuses are often the cause of air conditioning units not working.  Fixing these fuses is fairly simple, as standard sizes are available at most local hardware stores.

3. Check Your Thermostat

First, double-check the batteries in your thermostat, and make sure the thermostat is working properly.  If your AC unit isn’t turning on, try turning the thermostat down 5 – 10 degrees to see if that helps.  Sometimes your AC unit works fine, and the thermostat is the one that is acting up.  Make sure you thoroughly read the manual and use the troubleshooting methods it suggests.

4. Replace the Filter

Make sure the filter is clean.  If it is not, replacing it may fix your issues.  Royal Heating & Air suggests checking your filter every month and changing it as necessary.  If you have pets, you may need to change your filter more frequently.  If your system has a primary and secondary filter, do not forget to check both.  If your AC stays on longer than it should, it may just be a matter of a dirty air filter.  The same goes for if the AC unit is not blowing cool air, or not blowing much air.  Make sure your filters are clean and installed properly.

5. Clean Your Unit

If your AC unit turns on, but it is not cooling properly, go outside and see if the area around the unit is clean.  Make sure there is no debris or weeds blocking the air circulation.  Allow at least three feet of clear space around the AC unit.  Check all spaces to make sure there are no nests being formed or leaves blocking anything.  If your outdoor unit is clogged with dirt or other debris, you won’t get proper airflow.

6. Clean Air Ducts & Ensure Vents are all Open

Again, it may sound silly, but check ALL air vents in the home and make sure they are open - If even one of them is closed, it can make cooling your entire home more difficult.  Air ducts are prone to getting dusty and sometimes they get clogged, which restricts their ability to ventilate fresh air, so make sure you clean them thoroughly.  Also, sometimes the seams in the ducts leak the cool air.  If you come across any breaks, you may need to fill them with caulk.

7. Reset the AC Unit

Reset switches shut off the AC if there is a voltage issue.  In many units, the switch is manual control, which means you need to push the button again to get the AC unit working again.  Most reset switches are a red button that requires some effort to push.  Make sure to check the switch on the indoor unit as well as the disconnect switch to the outdoor unit.

Fix Your AC Unit with Royal Heating & Air

If these simple tricks don’t work, call the best AC repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks.  Don’t wait until your AC unit is not working to do regular maintenance.  Check your filters once a month and routinely make sure there is no debris surrounding the outside unit.  If your unit needs professional repair, call Royal Heating & Air today at 573-480-4313.

Benefits of Installing HVAC UV Lights

Is good air quality important to you and your family?  The air quality inside your home is directly related to the cleanliness of your ductwork.  In addition to better indoor air quality, cleaning your ducts also improves the efficiency of your HVAC system and reduces fire risks.  This is particularly important during the humid summer months, when mold has a better chance of developing.

UV light has been used to sterilize a variety of things.  Here at Royal Heating & Air, the use of UV light is for sterilizing air ducts, which reduces the amount of bacteria and results in a higher quality of air.  How exactly does this work, though?  Your Lake of the Ozarks HVAC company explains the use of UV lights in residential homes.

How UV Light Sterilization Works

HVAC UV lights remain on 24/7 and are very effective at controlling mold and bacteria.  Any mold in the line of sight of the UV light will be killed, minimizing the build-up on the coil.  In some cases, people with severe respiratory issues could tell when the light was burnt out due to the decrease in air quality.  But first, what exactly is Ultraviolet light?  Continue reading to find out!

What is Ultraviolet Light?

Ultraviolet light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that is not visible to the human eye.  This radiation comes from the sun and is transmitted in waves or particles at different wavelengths and frequencies.  This broad range of wavelengths is known as the electromagnetic spectrum.  The spectrum is generally divided into seven regions, with UV falling between visible light and x-rays.  UV light is generally then divided into three sub-categories: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C.  UV radiation has enough energy to break chemical bonds.  This can be beneficial for disinfecting surfaces, but it can be harmful to the skin and the eyes.  Today, a number of artificial sources have been devised for producing UV radiation that can be used for a variety of things, such as killing bacteria to improve the indoor air quality of a home or business.

How Does Ultraviolet Light Kill Bacteria?

Shortwave radiation, or UV-C, has a potent germ-killing effect.  The UV-C wavelengths are germicidal, meaning they are able to inactivate microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.  This property makes UV light an effective, environmentally-friendly and chemical-free approach to killing dangerous microorganisms.  The UV rays deactivate the DNA in bacteria and viruses, preventing them from reproducing.  At Royal Heating & Air, we have two types of UV lights that we can install in your ductwork to kill bacteria that has built up in there.  These UV lights remain on 24/7 and are very effective at controlling bacteria and mold.  Any microorganisms in the line of sight of the UV light will be killed, minimizing build-up on the coil and reducing bacteria in the air you breathe.

Benefits to Using HVAC UV Lights

There are many benefits to installing a UV light.  The most valuable benefit is the increase in indoor air quality.  UV lights control the amount of mold and bacteria in the air ducts.  This can reduce the chances of contracting a cold or the flu because the air is not re-circulated by the HVAC system.  Not only does the UV light reduce the number of bacteria in the air, but it also reduces smells and odors.  UV lights are especially beneficial to Lake of the Ozarks residents because they are more efficient in humid climates.  These lights can also reduce clogging in condensate drain lines by preventing algae growth.  Lastly, UV lights reduce the amount of mold build-up on the coil, which improves the efficiency of the unit and reduces overall electricity cost.

Benefits Summary

As stated above, there are many benefits to installing a UV light, most of which is the increase in indoor air quality.  Below is a short check-list of reasons to use an HVAC UV light:

  • Increases Airflow
  • Improves Efficiency
  • Helps Reduce Electricity Costs
  • Reduces Allergens
  • Kills Mold and Bacteria

Benefits of Custom Ductwork in Your Home

Ductwork is an important part of your HVAC system, so it should be designed for maximum efficiency and longevity. One of the best ways to achieve this, and more, is to have custom sheet metal ductwork fabricated for your home. Having ductwork tailored to your home and HVAC system has a number of benefits; however, without professional help, you could encounter ongoing problems down the road. Royal Heating & Air is here to help explain the benefits of custom ductwork in your home.

Why Get Custom Sheet Metal Fabrication?

The main benefit of having your ductwork customized to your home and HVAC system is knowing that this critical component has been hand-crafted by trained specialists. The ductwork in your home has to carry all of the heated or cooled air throughout your home. Having a good product that was custom made for your home is a great way to make sure that it works well.

Benefits of Custom Ductwork

Increased Performance

With ductwork that's custom fit to your home, you'll have the greater overall performance of your HVAC system. The improvement in airflow will help regulate temperatures in rooms throughout the home. Keeping the temperature constant, with fewer temperature swings, prevents your system from overworking. This can be especially beneficial for upstairs rooms or other rooms that typically get hotter or colder than others. Controlled temperatures throughout your home not only increases the performance of your system but promotes a longer life for your HVAC system.

Improved Efficiency

With custom ductwork, air can travel through the ducts more easily, without interruptions. It allows the air to get to you more quickly, without losing energy. This improved efficiency not only reduces a significant amount of waste, but it can save you money on your monthly energy bills. Greater efficiency means that hot or cold air will travel through your ductwork without any interruptions. Proper ductwork, designed specifically for your home, keeps your HVAC system working more efficiently.

Better Air Balance & Flow

One of the biggest issues with ductwork is poor installation. If typical, pre-made ductwork is installed in your home, it may be shoved into place which can cause pinching or collapsing. These problems can seriously interfere with the system’s air balance and flow. Getting ductwork custom designed for your home's specific measurements ensures that air flows without any hindrances. It will also help make sure that the air moving through your ducts gets to your rooms on the shortest possible path. With a custom ductwork system, you can rest assured that your system is perfectly balanced.

Custom Made For Your Home

When you hire a professional to create custom ductwork, they will create it to be perfectly suited for your HVAC system and your home. Your fabricator will ensure that your home receives the proper air load. They will also create the ducts to have the straightest route from your air handler to a given room. If your ductwork has too many turns, it can make it harder for your system to deliver the necessary air flow to your living spaces. When a professional creates custom ductwork for your home, they will ensure a matching return duct for every supply register. Having matching supply and return ducts helps optimize the circulation in your home. The most important part of custom sheet metal ducts is that they will be properly sealed, which prevents air loss, which will help increase energy efficiency and indoor air quality and put less stress on your system.

YOUR CUSTOM DUCTWORK SPECIALISTS

Royal Heating & Air specializes in sheet metal fabrication for custom ductwork at the Lake of the Ozarks. Custom ductwork allows for better airflow, distributes air evenly between rooms, and reduces leaks in unwanted areas. It also puts less strain on your HVAC system, allowing it to last longer.
