HVAC Facts That Make You Say, “Wait, What?”

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning can be difficult to understand if you're not an expert. Lucky for you, Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC Company at the Lake of the Ozarks and we're here to help! Keep reading today's blog to learn facts about HVAC systems that you may not know, and that could be costing you money and headaches.

Fans Don't Cool the House

Turning on ceiling and floor fans might make you feel cooler, but it won't actually bring down the temperature in the house. When you're home, you can set the thermostat around five degrees higher with fans on because they make you feel cooler by the air blowing on you. However, if you aren't home then there is no reason to keep fans blowing. It will only cost you energy and blow the same temperature air around the house.

Closing Vents is a Bad Idea

Some people think that closing vents can help save money by not expending energy heating or cooling the room where the vent is located. However, that is not true. Your HVAC system will use the same amount of energy even if the vents are closed. In fact, closing vents can actually cause quite a few problems for the HVAC system. It can make the system have to work harder to try and overcome the blocked off vents and still equalize the temperature in the home. Some of the issues that can come from this are duct leaks, frozen evaporator coils, airflow issues, pressure issues, dead compressors, humidity problems, cracked heat exchange, and more.

Bigger Isn't Always Better

It might be tempting to get a larger air conditioner in order to have a cooler home; however, that won't work. Your unit should be properly sized for the square footage of your home. An over-sized unit will only cause issues for your home including increased humidity, poor airflow and distribution, and frequent cycling on and off which uses a lot more energy than necessary. Be sure to consult with HVAC professionals to get the right sized unit installed in your home.

HVAC Systems Can Last a Long Time

If properly maintained, HVAC systems can actually last 10 to 20 years! Efficiency can start to dwindle at the end of a unit's lifespan. The best way to keep your system running as long as possible, be sure to schedule service checks 1-2 times per year. Scheduling these appointments in spring and fall can be very helpful for your systems as they prepare for the coming winter cold or summer heat.

AC Unit Lagging? Learn What Might be Wrong!

The air has been cooling off over the last few days, but with Missouri, it's likely that we have several sweltering days still in store before the fall season officially arrives. If your air conditioner is having a hard time keeping up with the temperature the thermostat is set for, then it might be time to call Royal Heating & Air. We have several different options we can look into to help make the air conditioning in your home more efficient and comfortable. Keep reading to learn more!

Dirty Air Filter

One of the simplest fixes to a struggling air conditioning unit is to replace the air filter. Air filters need to be regularly replaced, with the timeline depending on the type and thickness of the filter. Check the recommendation on the type of filter you use so that you know exactly when it needs to be replaced. If the filter gets too dirty, then the air flow will be significantly limited. That makes the air conditioning unit have to work hard to pull the air in your home efficiently. If the filter is clean, then it could be a more serious issue that may need attention from a local HVAC technician

Damaged Ductwork

Ductwork is unfortunately not invincible. If your ductwork wasn't put together properly, there could be leaks that are causing air flow inefficiencies. Even if it was installed properly, pests, shifting of the house, and other issues can cause the ducts to move and pull apart which causes issues in the system.

Never Properly Charged

When a new air conditioning unit gets installed, it must be properly connected and charged to work well. Charging a unit isn't like charging a phone, however. Rather than plugging into the wall to get a charge like you'd expect, "charging" means that a technician will properly fill the self-contained unit with refrigerant. This effectively cools the air while it's cycling through the system.

If a technician notices that your refrigerant levels are low, it could be possible that the unit was never charged to the amount it should have been to keep up with your home. Your HVAC technician can recharge the unit and perform regular maintenance to ensure levels are holding steady.

Leaking Refrigerant

If the levels continue to fall after a technician has properly charged it, then it is highly likely that your unit has a leak. This is not a good sign for your air conditioning unit. Refrigerant does not naturally get used up, so if levels are consistently decreasing, you definitely need to call Royal Heating & Air to come out and inspect your unit for leaks.
