Top 6 Blogs of 2019 – The Best HVAC Resource in the New Year!

What a year 2019 has been! Our team at Royal Heating & Air loves being part of the community at the Lake of the Ozarks and serving all your HVAC needs. Over the past year, we have shared some important and fun topics in the blog, and we are excited to recap a few of our favorites to close out the year. Read on to learn more!

1) Gas vs. Electric – Which is Best?

If you are considering installing a new heating system this winter, it could be important to consider the pros and cons of gas and electric systems. There are a lot of factors to consider, including how quickly each energy source can heat your home, how much each system costs both initially and over time, environmental factors, and how much maintenance each requires. Find out which energy source might be best for your home here!

2) Benefits of Installing HVAC UV Lights

Did you know that installing UV lighting in your HVAC system could help improve the air quality in your home? UV light is commonly used to sterilize a multitude of objects, including air ducts. Sterilization with ultraviolet light can help control the growth of mold and mildew and prevent build-up on the coil or algae growth in the drain lines. Find out more about what UV light could do for your HVAC system by reading the whole blog here.

3) Perks of Using a Smart Thermostat

It seems like everything is getting “smart” these days… Smart phones, smart watches, smart thermostats even! We love what smart thermostats bring to the table. They can help you save energy, make your HVAC system more convenient to use, and allow you to review past energy use to make better choices in the future. The full blog offers a lot of great insight into smart thermostats and how they can help improve your home.

4) How a Whole-Home Humidifier Could Improve Your Winter

The air in winter can feel significantly drier than it does in any other season. One great way to improve the air quality in your home during the winter is to install a whole home humidifier in the HVAC system. Keeping the air in your home moisturized not only helps your skin, nose, eyes, and throat feel more hydrated, but it could also keep your home in better condition. Find out how!

5) Carbon Monoxide: What it Does and How to Protect from Exposure

This is a very scary, life-threatening substance that can be difficult, if not impossible to detect with human senses. It comes from the fumes that are produced by burning fuel and can come from vehicles, small engines, stovetops, lanterns, grills, fireplaces, gas ranges, and furnaces. Carbon monoxide takes up the space in your lungs and red blood cells instead of oxygen. If you are exposed to it for too long, it can actually kill you. Learn more about this deadly substance and how you can protect yourself and your family from it in the full blog!

6) Learn 4 Ways Fido Could be Affecting the HVAC

There are a lot of factors that can affect the efficiency of your HVAC system. But did you know that one of those things could be your beloved family pet? Pets can affect the air filtration, airflow, temperature control, and the health of your outdoor units. Find out how you can help ease the burden on your HVAC system by reading the whole blog here.

Should the HVAC Unit be Repaired or Replaced? How to Read the Signs

Is your heater struggling to keep up in these freezing temperatures? If you're waking up with icy fingers and toes, your furnace could probably use some attention. Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we have your back! So before you get frustrated and decide to throw it out and start over, read on to learn more about what your HVAC could be trying to tell you. It could need anything from a simple repair to a total replacement.

Health Hazards

One of the biggest, and perhaps most important, reasons to replace your furnace would be if it is threatening the health of you and your family. Sometimes when a unit is damaged, it is easy to fix with a simple repair. Your local HVAC company could have you back to your daily routine in no time. This is not always the case, though. While repairs to valves and wires could be simple enough, repairs to a cracked heat exchanger are significantly more complicated. And if this issue is left unresolved, then the furnace could be leaking carbon monoxide into your house. This deadly, odorless gas is not something you ever want in your home. If there is an imminent threat of a carbon monoxide leak, it could be time to replace your unit entirely.

Long-Term Cost

Replacing a furnace is not cheap. However, if you find yourself repairing the unit over and over again, then you may actually save money in the long run by replacing it with a new unit. A good way to determine whether to repair or replace it is to compare the costs directly. If the cost of repairing the unit is more than 50% of the cost to replace it, then it may be a good idea to go ahead and invest in the replacement.

To help offset the costs, you may be able to take advantage of rebates through Ameren Missouri or Summit Natural Gas. With Ameren Missouri, you could earn rebates by purchasing a new, energy-efficient system. Summit Natural Gas offers great rebates as well for purchasing new systems and recycling the old one. Check out the available rebates here!

Unit's Lifespan

The average lifespan of a furnace is about 15-20 years. Remember that this is an average, not an exact range. Your 20-year-old furnace could still be running strong. This range is when half of all units have burnt out and half are still running. Some furnaces will last longer if they are well maintained and serviced, while others will struggle with longevity due to harsh winters and inadequate care. When your unit starts needing frequent repairs, then it is probably time to make a change and replace the furnace.

Efficiency

The purpose of your HVAC system is to keep you comfortable in your home regardless of hot or cold it is outside. If your system is no longer performing its job well, or if the heating bill has suddenly skyrocketed, it could be time to take action. Call your local HVAC company to come out and check whether the issue has a quick fix or means your unit needs to be replaced. Sometimes your HVAC system simply needs to be serviced and have the ductwork cleaned out. Your furnace could also just be an old, inefficient system. HVAC technology has advanced significantly over time, so replacing your old unit could be exactly what the system needed.

Learn 4 Ways Fido Could be Affecting the HVAC!

There are a lot of factors that can affect the efficiency of your HVAC system. But did you know that one of those things could be your beloved family pet? As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, Royal Heating & Air knows how to help improve the efficiency of your air conditioning and heating units even with a fur-baby or two in the home. Read on to learn more!

Filtration

Nearly any pet that you adopt will shed dander and hair throughout your home. Even if you regularly dust and vacuum, a lot of that shedding will still end up in your air filter. Check the recommendations of your specific kind of air filter to see how often you should check and replace it. You may want to increase the frequency of checks and replacements, though, if you have a pet. The higher amount of loose materials floating around your home and getting stirred up from the carpet, the more quickly the filter will become full and need replacement. You may also want to consider an air filter that is hypoallergenic to help reduce the presence of dander allergens in the air.

Airflow

Does your cat love curling up next to the vent to soak in all the warmth from the heater? It may be cute and Instagram-worthy, but it could also be affecting your HVAC's efficiency. When rooms or vents are blocked off, your HVAC system has to work harder to compensate and bring the whole home to the set temperature. Keep an eye on your vents to ensure your pet isn't regularly covering them with toys, lying on them, or dropping sticks and debris from outside down the ducts.

Temperature

When people don't have pets at home, they can program their thermostats to lower temperatures in the winter and higher ones in the summer to conserve energy. However, if you have a pet that stays at home while you're away at work, you may not want to drop the temperature as low. This means your HVAC system will run more constantly throughout the day and expend more energy. While you may not want to allow the temperature to fluctuate too drastically, you can still allow a little bit of flex to help save energy by implementing a programmable thermostat. Ask your favorite Royal Heating & Air technician how to get started installing one in your home!

Outdoor Units

If your pet can access the HVAC unit, they may be marking their territory and urinating on the unit without you even realizing it. If this is the case, the urine could be causing serious damage to the unit and shortening the life of your HVAC system. Consider putting a fence around the unit to keep your pet away from it.

Your HVAC System Solution

Having a pet in your family's life can be a huge bonus! Who can resist puppy eyes? But when it starts to slow down your HVAC system, you may need a little help from a local HVAC company that has your back. Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we are here for you. Give us a call today to schedule your regular maintenance check-up!

Tips to Prepare the HVAC System for Winter Weather!

The days are getting shorter and colder as we move into the winter season! Soon the sleet, snow, and ice storms will start in earnest. Is your HVAC system prepared? Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC Company at the Lake of the Ozarks, so we know what it takes to help you get your systems ready for winter. Read on to learn more!

Schedule a Maintenance Check

Help your heating system out by scheduling regular maintenance checks and inspections. A professional HVAC technician can usually find issues in your unit before they cause bigger problems or system failure. They will inspect the unit's overall condition, motor, electrical components, safety controls, and more. If anything is lagging or has minor damage that could cause issues down the road, your technician will recommend a repair or replacement so you don't end up stuck with a broken heater in the dead of winter.

Look for Leaks

Leaks in the seals on your home can be somewhat difficult to notice in the warmer months. However, as the temperature drops, you may notice heat escaping near your windows and doors. Check the seals in these areas to make sure there aren't any cracks or gaps letting hot air escape. There are several tools you can use to help seal off doors and windows. Some are very simple additions to the bottom of the door or window that provide an additional buffer from the elements.

If you are still noticing a lot of heat loss in the winter months, you may want to consider investing in energy-efficient windows. These windows help hold in the warm air (or in the summer, the cool air) so your HVAC system doesn't have to work so hard to keep up. If you aren't sure how efficient your HVAC system is, call Royal Heating & Air and schedule a Home Comfort Check. We will do a complete check of your heater, gas furnace burners, and heating elements and help you find anything that may not be functioning at its optimal level.

Keep Airflow in Mind

It is important to maintain good airflow throughout your home to keep your HVAC system functioning efficiently. Regularly check your air filters to ensure they are not dirty. A filter overloaded with dust, pet hair, and debris cannot properly filter the air in your home and will force your heater to work harder to push air through the dirty filter. Check the recommendations on the filter type you use to know how often your filter should be replaced.

Some people think that closing vents and doors in unused rooms can help the HVAC system preserve energy. It actually has the opposite effect. The air is still being heated and pushed through your air ducts to that vent. Blocking the vent or shutting the door does not efficiently redirect the airflow to other areas in your home. Instead, your HVAC system has a hard time keeping your whole home at a consistent temperature and ends up working harder.

Get a Programmable Thermostat

Traditional thermostats simply read the temperature of the room and signal your HVAC system to kick in if it is below (or above in the summer) the temperature you set for your home. A programmable thermostat can learn your patterns by keeping track of how you set the temperature throughout the day. When you're away at work, it can give your HVAC system a break. Do you like to sleep with the air a little cooler? Your programmable thermostat can do that for you automatically! With the freedom to set your programmable thermostat and forget it, you can sit back and relax while it saves you time and potentially even money.

Royal Heating & Air is here to serve you and all of your HVAC needs. We love taking care of you and making sure your home stays comfortable year-round. 5 Tips to Help Get Your Home Ready for Winter!

The weather outside is about to get frightful! Help keep your family comfortable and your home in good condition this winter with a few helpful tips from our team at Royal Heating & Air. As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we have your back to help keep you and your home comfortable! Read on to learn how to get your home ready this season.

Schedule Heating Checkup

Now is a great time to check-in on your HVAC, especially your heating system. No one wants to have a heating emergency in the dead of winter. Help prevent emergencies by scheduling regular maintenance on your HVAC system. This can help keep everything running efficiently and safely through the cold season. If you do experience an HVAC emergency, remember that you can always call our team at Royal Heating & Air!

Reverse the Ceiling Fans

Some fans may not have this function, but if the ceiling fans in your home have the ability to reverse their direction it could really help with the temperature feel in your home. Running ceiling fans in a clockwise direction pulls the ambient air up and pushes the heat trapped at the ceiling down into the room. Circulating the warm air in your home can help the air feel warmer at a lower temperature than usual.

Mind Your Roof

It can be important to make sure everything is up to standard with your roofing before winter starts in earnest. Don’t get stuck with roof leaks from snowmelt because of an overlooked crack or gap. Another way to make sure your roof is protected is to keep your gutters clear from debris. If gutters get overfilled, water can get backed up into your attic or other areas in your home where it shouldn’t be. When this water freezes, it can cause even more damage.

Drain Outdoor Water Lines

Call your landscaping company before the ground freezes to drain the water from your irrigation system. Any residual water left in your irrigation system over the winter season will freeze, expand, and likely cause serious damage to the entire system. It is also a good idea to disconnect and drain the hoses around your house.

Restock Winter Essentials

Don’t get stuck in the cold without the winter essentials you need. Before the snow and ice hits, make sure you have everything you will need to safely move about and get out of the house. Put your shovel and ice scraper where they will be easily accessible when needed. Purchase ice melt to keep on hand. Ice storms don’t always come with fair warning, so having it on hand can be tremendously helpful. It is also a good idea to keep your car stocked with items that will keep you safe a warm in case of an accident while you wait for emergency response… heavy blanket, hand & foot warmers, flashlight, reflective triangle, etc.

Preparing Your Lake of the Ozarks Home

We hope these winterization tips help you feel comfortable and prepared coming into the winter season! Give us a call to schedule your fall HVAC maintenance and a home comfort check. Royal Heating & Air is here to serve you!

Gas vs. Electric – Which is Best?

We are deep into fall, and some days it feels like winter is already upon us! If you are considering a new heating system this season and aren’t sure what kind of energy source to go with, Royal Heating& Air has some tips to help! We are the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we are here to help you. Read on to learn more and give us a call to install your new system!

Heat Rate

Gas and electric heating systems produce heat at different speeds because of the way they operate. Gas furnaces produce the maximum amount of heat possible as soon as the burners start running, so they can heat your home relatively quickly. Electric furnaces must spend time powering up before they begin to heat the air flowing through your home. What this means for you is that, once you make a change on your thermostat, a gas furnace will be able to kick in and warm up your home faster than an electric furnace which will experience somewhat of a delay.

Cost

Cost is a very important factor to consider when determining which kind of system you want to install. New systems typically last between 15 and 20 years, sometimes longer if maintained appropriately. That is quite a long-term investment!

Initial Cost

Electric systems win out on initial cost, as they typically do not require any additional construction to install. They can be installed relatively quickly with little to no interruption of your daily life. Gas systems, on the other hand, require proper ventilation, so oftentimes vents and flue pipes must be constructed before a gas furnace can be utilized in your home.

Cost Overall

Even though electric systems are cheaper to install initially, they can cost more money on a monthly basis. Electric is a more costly energy source, so making the larger up-front investment in a gas furnace can be beneficial long-term. This is particularly true in colder climates like ours where the heater runs at a high capacity for many months out of the year.

Maintenance

Because gas furnaces run combustible fuel, they must be regularly checked to ensure they are still operating safely and efficiently. If something goes wrong, it could cause a carbon monoxide leak and seriously threaten your health. Electric systems still need maintenance, but not quite as much as gas furnaces.

Environmental Impact

One may think at first that gas furnaces are not environmentally friendly because “gas” is associated often associated in our minds with emissions and bad effects on the air. Electricity seems harmless without digging into how its energy is created. Electricity is primarily fueled by coal, which is not considered environmentally friendly. While producing natural gas does emit some harmful emissions, it burns cleaner than coal. Therefore, gas is considered somewhat more friendly to the environment than electricity.

Whether you choose gas or electric to heat your home, feel confident knowing that Royal Heating & Air has your back. We install the best systems around and can service nearly any HVAC system currently operating in your home. We are the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we are available whenever you need us. Entrust your HVAC needs to the expert team at Royal Heating & Air!

Learn All About Air Filters - Types, Uses, and More!

Air filters play a very important role in the functionality and efficiency of your HVAC system. By pushing air through the filter, your HVAC system can help keep the air in your home cleaner and healthier. Some filters simply help prevent the spread of dust and debris, while others can help reduce allergens in the air. Choosing the right filter can seem like a daunting task when you're standing in front of an aisle full of so many sizes, ratings, and brands. Let Royal Heating & Air help give you some pointers on how to choose the right air filter for your home. Read on to learn more from the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Facts About Air Filters

Filters are rated on the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) system to determine how efficient they are and what kind of materials they help filter from the air (MERV Rating Chart: http://www.mechreps.com/PDF/Merv_Rating_Chart.pdf). A rating of 1-4 offers minimal filtration and can remove dust mites, fibers, pollen, and dust from the air it filters. Ratings 5-8 can filter the air more thoroughly by removing smaller particles like mold spores, cement dust, and even hair spray. For a more superior filtration, ratings 9-12 can remove Legionella, lead dust, auto emissions, and certain fumes. Ratings between 12 and 20 are typically reserved for surgical rooms, hospitals, "cleanrooms", pharmaceuticals, and areas that deal with hazardous materials.

Air filters not only help filter the air in your home, but they also protect your HVAC system and the air ducts from accumulating dust and debris that would affect its efficiency. To help keep the air and your ducts clean, regularly change your air filters and don't allow them to get clogged.

Types of Air Filters

Fiberglass

This is the most common type of filter on the market. Comprised of fiberglass, these filters help eliminate major debris in the air. Although they are on the lower end of the MERV rating system, they are highly affordable and easily accessible.

Pleated

These filters have a higher rating on the MERV system, reaching between 5 and 13. Because they help eliminate mold spores and finer particles from the air, pleated filters could be a great idea for homeowners that suffer from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions. The drawback to these types of filters is that they can be somewhat less efficient. With more resistance to airflow, your system may have to work harder to push air through the house, particularly if you have trouble remembering to change the filter regularly.

HEPA

These are very thorough filters that are rated between 17 and 20 on the MERV system and can filter out tobacco smoke and bacteria. If you have an indoor smoker in your home or someone that suffers from a condition that makes them susceptible to infections, this filter may be the right choice. However, they can be difficult to install and may require a professional technician.

Reusable

These air filters can be washed and replaced, helping save on long-term costs for air filtration. The MERV rating is on the low end, only filtering out major dust particles, mites, and pollen at a 1-4. While these are convenient and cost-effective, they can cause additional issues in your system. If they are not perfectly dried before being reinstalled, they can grow mold and mildew and start to spread it in the air in your home.

Sensing

Some newer filters can actually time how long they have been operating, sense the amount of debris they have accumulated, and alert you that it's time to change the filter. Some brands can even automatically order replacements as needed. While this technology is incredibly convenient and ensures your filters are never overloaded, make sure to check the MERV rating to see if it truly is a good fit for your home and lifestyle.

FAQs About Variable Speed Technology

Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks. We use advanced tools and technology to help keep your systems running efficiently. One of those advanced methods is Variable Speed Technology. Due to industry-wide requirements, all new HVAC systems use some form of variable speed technology, but some units use a more advanced version of the technology than others. Read on to learn more about how variable speed technology works and the advanced options you can find in some systems. Call Royal Heating & Air to find out more about the systems we can install for you!

How Does it Work?

Variable Speed Technology allows HVAC systems to adapt to the home's temperature needs and adjust the output accordingly. Without variable speed technology, an HVAC system runs either at 100% on, or is off completely. This can use a lot of energy because your system constantly has to rev up to reach temperature after it has been off. The variable speed technology's purpose is to function at multiple capacity levels. This technology may be able to help lower your utility bills because it uses less electricity than a conventional motor.

On very hot summer days, the compressor can operate at 100% capacity to cool your house down to the desired temperature. When the temperature is milder, it can operate at a lower capacity (as low as 30%) to keep your home comfortable while saving on energy.

Variable speed technology is also very helpful in the winter, as it can help prevent the feeling that cold air is blowing through the vents. This works because the varying speeds allow it to control the amount of air blowing through the vents and into your home.

Energy Efficiency

When your HVAC system turns on from being shut off for a while, it sucks a lot of energy to reheat your home to the proper temperature. Variable speed technology allows your system to preserve energy by running continuously. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy reports that a motor that uses variable speed technology may use as much as 75% less power than a base model motor. (Source: https://www.energy.gov/eere/amo/variable-speed-low-cost-motor-residential-hvac-systems)

Variable Speed Advances

More advanced systems can sense the amount of air that is moving through the system and adjust to compensate for any inadequacies. For example, if you have a dirty air filter, if the air ducts are too small or too large, or if there are other issues within your HVAC, the variable speed technology can adjust the amount of airflow to keep your home feeling comfortable regardless of what issues your HVAC system may be experiencing.

Your Lake of the Ozarks System

Carbon Monoxide: What it Does and How to Protect from Exposure

Carbon monoxide is a substance that could threaten the health and safety in your own home. You may have heard of it before, but do you know how common carbon monoxide exposure is and how it can affect your health? As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, Royal Heating & Air cares about your wellbeing. Read on to learn important information about how to protect yourself and your family from carbon monoxide this season.

Where Does it Come From?

Carbon monoxide, or CO, can be found in fumes that come from burning fuel. Sources can include vehicles, small engines, stovetops, lanterns, grills, fireplaces, gas ranges, and furnaces. Because many of these items are commonly found in nearly every home in America, the likelihood that you could be exposed to carbon monoxide is high. In fact, over 400 Americans die annually from unintentional CO poisoning. Even more frightening, over 20,000 people visit the emergency room and 4,000 people are then hospitalized from CO exposure every year in the United States. (https://www.cdc.gov/co/faqs.htm) Keep reading to find out why carbon monoxide is dangerous and how you can help protect yourself and your family from exposure.

Why is it Dangerous?

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas. For that reason, it can be hard to know if there is a carbon monoxide leak in your home. If CO builds up indoors or in an enclosed area, it can be deadly. As your body is forced to breathe in more carbon monoxide and less oxygen, it starts to affect your bloodstream. The oxygen in your red blood cells gets replaced with carbon monoxide which does serious damage to your body and can often result in death without treatment.

The symptoms of carbon monoxide are often likened to the flu. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, get to fresh air and seek medical attention: dull headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision, or loss of consciousness. (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/carbon-monoxide/symptoms-causes/syc-20370642)

How to Protect Yourself from Exposure

The idea that a substance could be leaking into your home and threatening your health without you knowing is terrifying to consider. To help alleviate your fear, try implementing some of the following tips in your home.

  • Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home.
  • When you buy gas equipment, make sure it has a seal from a national testing agency.
  • Check and clean your chimney every year.
  • Don't patch a pipe with tape, gum, etc.
  • Never use your gas range or oven as a heating source for your home.
  • Have your heating system and other gas appliances checked regularly by a qualified technician.
