What's That Emergency Button - Should I Use It?

With all these subfreezing temperatures, snow accumulation, and frozen water, you might be taking a closer look at your thermostat and heating system. You may have noticed a setting on your thermostat that says "emergency heat" and now you're wondering what that means and if you should use it during this extreme weather. Royal Heating & Air is the best heating and cooling company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we are here to help you understand your HVAC system and how to best use the settings available to you. Keep reading to learn more!

What IS Emergency Heat?

Emergency heat is the second stage of heat used in your heating system. When the temperatures drop below 32 degrees, your heat pump may need help producing warm air. A heat pump takes the outside air and uses it to produce heat in your home. When the air becomes extremely cold, it becomes harder for the heat pump to convert it to warm air. The emergency heat setting will bypass the heat pump in this situation and produce warm air using your electric furnace.

Should I Use It?

When temperatures start dropping, your heating system should automatically switch and adjust how it produces warm air. It should automatically adjust and use its secondary heat source to help warm your home. If you notice cool air blowing from your vents, you can switch over to emergency heat to see if it helps. If you notice your heat pump not working or the outside unit is frozen, switch to emergency heat and then give us a call. You do not want the system to only use the emergency heat setting, so don't switch over to emergency heat unless you need to. It is meant to be used temporarily, hence the name "Emergency".

Is Emergency Heat Expensive?

Typically, yes. It is using more electricity to run the emergency heat source. Factors that could impact the cost is if you use gas or propane instead of electricity to run your heat. The cost will then depend on the cost of gas and propane. In most cases, it is more costly to use the emergency heat setting, which is why it is best to only use it when needed.

Do I Need an HVAC Tech?

Give us a call if you have any questions at all about your heating system. We know it can be confusing, but most of all we don't want you caught in an emergency situation. As mentioned above, if you notice cool air coming out of your vents or your home not warming up, it is time to give us a call. The best way to ensure your system is ready for the cooler weather is with regular maintenance on your HVAC system. Fall and Spring are the best time to get your system checked before the extreme cold and hot weather hits.

Should I Get a Backup Generator in 2021?

Are you thinking about whether or not you should get a backup generator this year? If you have ever experienced a power outage in the middle of using electricity, then you know how frustrating it can be. When the power goes out, Royal Heating & Air knows it can not only be frustrating, it can also be dangerous. Right now the "real feel" temperature is negative 4 degrees Fahrenheit. BRR! If your power were to go out in an ice storm, would your family be safe after several hours without heat? Power generators can make all the difference. Keep reading to learn all about them!

What is a Backup Generator?

Backup power generators can provide electricity as a secondary source when the usual source has gone out for whatever reason. If you live in a rural area, you may find that this happens quite frequently. All it takes is a tree branch falling onto an electrical line and causing it to short out, turning the power off for everyone down the line.

What Can a Generator Power?

The answer to this question will largely depend on the size and quality of the generator that you buy. Some generators are large and powerful enough to power your whole home during an outage. Other generators can power just what you need during emergencies.

Some of the most important items in your home to power include the refrigerator and any deep freezers you own, the HVAC system, and your water source. If you lose power to the refrigerator and freezer, your food will likely start to go bad very quickly. This can cost a lot of money to replace and is a major inconvenience to dispose of and completely replace all your food and drinks. The HVAC system is important to power as well, especially in times of extreme weather. In the middle of summer, the untamed heat and humidity could be dangerous for small children and the elderly. In the winter, power to the heater could mean life or death. Water is also a very important resource to have access to. Depending on how your water is set up, it may need electricity to power the pump that provides the necessary pressure for it to flow to your home.

Is a Backup Generator the Same as a Portable One?

In short, no. While they both provide power, a portable generator is meant to be used for smaller items that need to be powered outdoors and don't have access to an electrical outlet. A bounce house at a carnival would be the perfect example. These must be refilled and only last for a certain amount of time. For that reason, they are not a good option for powering your home if the electricity goes out. A home backup generator has significantly more power and can be set to keep certain essentials running until the electricity returns.

Work-From-Home Considerations

If your company has moved to a permanent work-from-home status, then you may need more than just a basic generator. Power outages are unpredictable, and they don't strike at times that are convenient for you. If a 4-hour power outage could derail your work day and cause projects to be late, then you may need to consider a power generator that will keep your computer system up and running for the duration of the outage.

HVAC at the Lake of the Ozarks

Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we are here to help you stay safe and comfortable at home year-round. If you are experiencing regular power outages, then a power generator could be a very valuable investment. Regular outages and power surges could be damaging to your HVAC system and other powered systems in your home. So, if there have been several outages, then it could be important to have a professional HVAC technician come out to your home to make sure everything is still running well. Give Royal Heating & Air a call - We'd be happy to help!
