Building a Home? Custom Ductwork is a Must!

You know you want your new home to have wood floors, vaulted ceilings, and a large kitchen island. But what about the HVAC system? While HVAC might not be an exciting feature to dream about, it's important to consider how well it is being built from the start.

Royal Heating and Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, so we know how important good HVAC is in a new home. One of the best solutions is designing custom ductwork for the new house. There are a lot of incredible benefits to custom ductwork that you can enjoy long after the last wall is painted and the last picture hung. Keep reading to learn more!

No Wasted Space!

With a lot of traditional ductwork, standardized pieces are used to build the system throughout your home. However, this can often lead to the ducts being longer in places where the path could have been more direct. These standard pieces are also prone to leaks because of the way they fit together. At Royal Heating & Air, we enjoy working with you to provide custom ductwork that works with the flow of your home, rather than against it.

Optimized Materials

When you choose custom ductwork, you can ensure the best quality products are being used in your space. Each space is unique and has different obstacles for air flow. The right metal products and other custom pieces can help ensure you are getting the best possible product for your new construction.

Better Efficiency

Air ducts that are pieced together can cause issues with your HVAC system. Without proper airflow available, you may be limiting the level of efficiency at which your home or business system can run. This will make your system have to work harder, which could put a strain on it that leads to sooner and more costly repairs. Enhance the efficiency of your air flow with custom ductwork from Royal Heating & Air!

More Consistent Temperature

With proper air flow and better air efficiency, you can expect the temperature throughout your home to be more reliable. No more hot or cold spots throughout the house! When your ductwork is optimized, the HVAC system can more easily keep the whole house at a consistent temperature.

Why Would an AC Unit Freeze Up?

It's the middle of summer and the heat and humidity are high! So how would it make sense that an air conditioning unit could freeze during such hot temperatures? Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks and we are here to help answer that question for you. Check out the rest of today's blog to learn more about why air conditioning units might freeze up in the summer time, and how you can prevent it.

Low Refrigerant

Refrigerant is a cooling chemical that helps turn the air moving through the AC unit from warm air into cold air. So, if the refrigerant levels are too low, the pressure in the system also can get too low, which in turn drops the temperature of the unit. While it might sound okay for an AC unit to be cold, the whole system is not supposed to get that way. If it does, the evaporator coil can actually freeze up and stop working.

Low refrigerant levels are not normal for a healthy AC system and could mean that you have a leak. Call our professional HVAC technicians at Royal Heating & Air to come out and take a look at your AC unit. We can inspect your system and look for any leaks or issues with your refrigerant that may be causing freezes.

Lack of Airflow

Air conditioning units require airflow in order to cool your home. They don't simply blow cold air into the house. Instead, they actually pull air from your home, run it over the evaporator coil, and then blow it back into the home. The evaporator coil allows the refrigerant to absorb excess heat, which is how the air is cooled. So, if air is being blocked from flowing freely through your unit to the coil, then the coil can get too cold. This can easily cause condensation to turn to ice and freeze-up your unit.

One thing that can commonly affect airflow in the home is the condition of the air filter. It is important to change the filter regularly to ensure enough air is getting through to the evaporator coil. You may need to check your filter more often if you have pets or a home that is prone to dust. You can also call the professionals in HVAC repair at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we can come check it out for you!

Residue on the Coils

Evaporator coils play an extremely important roll in the air conditioning process, as we've discuss. But did you know that they also help dehumidify the air? The evaporator coil pulls water out of the air, helping to dehumidify your home and make it feel even cooler. When an AC unit is working well, the water it pulls from the air drips from the coil and into a pan. If the coils are dirty, though, then the moisture they pull from the air can hang around for too long and freeze over before it can drip off of the coil.

Schedule regular air conditioner maintenance to make sure that the evaporator coils are not accumulating too much residue and dirt that could cause your AC unit to freeze-up this summer.

Learn How a Backup Power Generator Can Help

A lot of us are spending more time at home this year than we anticipated, especially for those that have been moved from an office environment to a work-from-home environment. Royal Heating & Air knows that all of this extra time at home can bring up some important issues that you may not have thought of as much before.

For example, what happens if you're working from home and the power goes out? That could throw a real wrench in your productivity! That is why we are talking about backup power generators today, and how they could help keep your home running smoothly in a power outage.

What is a Backup Generator?

Backup power generators can provide electricity as a secondary source when the usual source has gone out for whatever reason. If you live in a rural area, you may find that this happens quite frequently. All it takes is a tree branch falling onto an electrical line and causing it to short out, turning the power off for everyone down the line.

Is a Backup Generator the Same as a Portable One?

In short, no. While they both provide power, a portable generator is meant to be used for smaller items that need to be powered outdoors and don't have access to an electrical outlet. A bounce house at a carnival would be the perfect example. These must be refilled and only last for a certain amount of time. For that reason, they are not a good option for powering your home if the electricity goes out. A home backup generator has significantly more power and can be set to keep certain essentials running until the electricity returns.

What Can a Generator Power?

The answer to this question will largely depend on the size and quality of the generator that you buy. Some generators are large and powerful enough to power your whole home during an outage. Other generators can power just what you need during emergencies.

Some of the most important items in your home to power include the refrigerator and any deep freezers you own, the HVAC system, and your water source. If you lose power to the refrigerator and freezer, your food will likely start to go bad very quickly. This can cost a lot of money to replace and is a major inconvenience to dispose of and completely replace all your food and drinks. The HVAC system is important to power as well, especially in times of extreme weather. In the middle of summer, the untamed heat and humidity could be dangerous for small children and the elderly. In the winter, power to the heater could mean life or death. Water is also a very important resource to have access to. Depending on how your water is set up, it may need electricity to power the pump that provides the necessary pressure for it to flow to your home.

Work-From-Home Considerations

If your company has moved to a permanent work-from-home status, then you may need more than just a basic generator. Power outages are unpredictable, and they don't strike at times that are convenient for you. If a 4-hour power outage could derail your work day and cause projects to be late, then you may need to consider a power generator that will keep your computer system up and running for the duration of the outage.

Your HVAC Provider at the Lake

If you have experienced several power outages that are starting to disrupt your life, then it may be time to invest in a backup power generator for your home. Another important thing to consider is how these outages are affecting your HVAC system. Regular outages could be putting a strain on your system as it tries to catch back up every time the power returns. Power surges can also be dangerous to the electrical components in your HVAC. If you have had several power outages at your home, give the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks a call! Our technicians at Royal Heating & Air can come out to your home and do a complete check of your system to make sure everything is still in top notch condition.

Simple Questions to Ask Before Calling Your HVAC Professional

You likely rely heavily on your air conditioner this time of year. Having your HVAC system malfunction can be uncomfortable and even dangerous in the heat of the summer. Royal Heating & Air has you covered! The best HVAC repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help with some tips that you can try yourself if you notice your air conditioner is not working like it should.

Is your Electricity Working?

It's important to make sure you double-check that all electrical is working properly in your home. If there seems to be an issue on the electrical side, it may just be a temporary outage in your area.

Are your Vents Open?

Go around to every vent in your home and make sure they are all open. Restricting airflow can make it more difficult for your unit to properly cool your home in the hot summer months.  Try to avoid placing any large furniture or other items in front of a vent that may block proper air flow.

Is your Thermostat on?

Sometimes your AC unit is actually working fine and the thermostat is having issues. Try to change out the batteries in your thermostat. You can also turn your air down 5-10 degrees to see if your unit kicks on. These are both effective ways to diagnose if your thermostat is actually the problem - not your air conditioner.

Have you Replaced the Filter?

Make sure the filter is clean and properly installed. It can be difficult for air to travel through a dirty filter and it can even cause your ac unit to run harder than it should. Royal Heating & Air suggests checking your filter every month and changing it as necessary. Pets in the home can cause buildup on your filter quicker than normal so it's best to change it even more often if you have furry friends around the home.

Is your AC Unit Clean?

If your unit is not functioning like it should, go outside and see if the area around the unit is clear. Remove any debris or weeds that may be blocking the air circulation. It's best to allow at least three feet of clear space around the AC unit. If your outdoor unit is clogged with dirt or other debris, carefully remove any debris. You can even wash your unit off with a garden hose to remove any debris that's stuck on the unit.

Call the Pros at Royal Heating & Air

After you've run through these questions & tried these simple tricks, it's time to call our AC repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks. It's best to have a repair done before your unit completely stops working that way you aren't suffering in the summer heat until we can make the repair. Royal Heating & Air is here to make you and your family comfortable in your home this summer!
