Fun HVAC Facts!

As your locally owned and operated full-service HVAC company at Lake of the Ozarks, we want to make sure you know your facts about HVAC units. Today’s blog will focus on a brief history of HVAC and will include some interesting and fun HVAC facts! Your heating and cooling company at Lake of the Ozarks has all the fun facts in today's blog.

HVAC History

The idea of “cooling the air” started hundreds of years ago when the Egyptians used man powered fans and the Indians used ropes to move large fans.  However, the modern heating and cooling system that we are used to and know today began in the mid-1700s, with the discovery of “latent heat” by Joseph Black that helped further the development of water heating systems.  It was around this time that Benjamin Franklin invented the very first stove, and James Watt invented the steam engine.
In the 1830s Dr. John Gorrie designed a machine that started the basis of air conditioning.  The machine was designed to use compression to create buckets of ice; the air was then blown over the ice, which cooled the surrounding air.

The ideas that led to modern day HVAC systems really blossomed in the 1900s.  Furnace systems with centrifugal fans, high- pressure steam heating systems, massive fan systems, and high-speed centrifugal fans and axial flow fans with small electric motors were used extremely often.  A company named Buffalo Forge made the first fan coil dehumidifying system.  This same company made the very first spray type air conditioning device.

In 1902 Willis Carter started the Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America and became known in American history as the inventor of modern air conditioning.  In 1925, air conditioning was introduced to the public at the Rivoli Theater in New York City.  In 1931, inventors H.H. Schultz and J.Q. Sherman created the first individual air conditioning units, made specifically for functioning on window ledges.  1939 saw the release of the first air-conditioned car.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that air conditioning really hit mainstream America when millions of units were installed in homes during the post-WWII economic boom.  In the 1970s central air revolutionized air conditioning.  A ventilation system was created at this time that worked with a new type of unit; this new type of unit included a condenser, coils, and a fan, which made it able to bring conditioned air (HEATED and COOLED) throughout the entire home.  There have been updates and progress to this version, but this was the dynamic change in how America saw heating and cooling.  There haven’t been any major innovations in the HVAC industry since the 1970s, but technology has become much more energy-efficient and there are many more options for conditioned air.

10 Fun HVAC Facts

1. The word “furnace” comes from the Greek word “Fornax,” which means oven.

2. The Romans were the first to use a heating system. This heating system was called a “hypocaust”. It sent heat through the floors and walls of the homes of rich Romans.

3. Herbert Hoover was the first President to enjoy air conditioning in the White House. He spent $30,000 to install the system in the oval office, just after the start of the Great Depression.

4. In 1913, Charles Gates built the first fully air-conditioned home in Minneapolis but sadly, he died just before he got to move in and experience it.

5. If you wanted to buy a basic AC unit in the 1940s, it would cost you approximately $350. Translating that into today’s price based on inflation, you would be paying almost $3,500.

6. The field of medicine is one of the most benefited aspects of air conditioning. The formulation of important medicines and antidotes is made possible with the cool temperature inside the laboratories.

7. Air conditioning has greatly contributed to making movie theaters as one of the most successful businesses back in the early 20th century. Many people would gather in theater houses not just for the film but also to enjoy the cool air inside. This is where the term “Summer Blockbuster” started.

8. Children were given summer vacation from school because of the lack of air conditioning, but even when air conditioning came about, schools decided to keep this going. Businesses also used to shut down for two months.

9. Air conditioning in the U.S. uses the same amount of energy as it takes to power the whole continent of Africa, and that’s just air conditioning alone! With such high-energy use, it’s no wonder why the need for HVAC technicians are in such high demand!

10. There are approximately 300,000 miles or more of natural gas pipelines in the U.S. If you were to weld every single one of them together, the new pipeline could reach the distance of the moon and beyond.

Ductwork Facts!

Know your facts about ductwork before installing or replacing it in your home. Ductwork has evolved over the years creating a comfortable temperature in your home. Many times ductwork is out of sight, out of mind and not understanding the vital role ductwork plays in your home can create many problems. Today's blog will review facts about ductwork and its importance in your home. Custom ductwork can make a huge difference in efficiently keeping your home or business comfortable. There are many benefits to having custom ductwork, and your HVAC Company at Lake of the Ozarks is going to give you the facts about having custom ductwork in your home or business.

History Of Ductwork

Ductwork began by the Chinese in the 7th century as a way to keep buildings warm without filling the structure with smoke. Even though the Chinese created a system that fit their needs at the time, the first recorded central heating came from the Romans around 300 B.C. They created their own system which used vertical tubes underneath tile to heat a room. Warm air was sent through the tubes through ducts from a wood furnace creating heat in the building. This thought process evolved in a variety of ways over the years to meet social needs. Eventually, ductwork continued to evolve as a way to cool structures to provide comfort year round.

Facts About Ductwork

Most people don't put a lot of thought into ductwork and the importance it serves in your home. Properly installed ductwork can help keep your home comfortable and aid in the overall efficiency of your homes energy use. Check out a few facts about ductwork:

  • Ductwork is available in different types of materials.  Know your options before installing or replacing ductwork to make sure you get the best material for your use. Understanding your options may make a difference in the overall efficiency of your home.

  • Ductwork is susceptible to extreme weather.  Make sure the ductwork in your home is installed properly. Exposed ductwork can become warm if in direct sunlight causing the air inside to be warm. The same concept is applied if the ductwork isn't insulated properly in cooler areas of the home. Make sure the ductwork is installed properly to ensure the air flowing through your home is the temperature you want it to be.

  • Ductwork can develop a build-up of mold, mildew, slime and other microbial growth. It is important to have your ducts cleaned. If left in your ducts the air is spreading this growth throughout your home. Knowing the importance of UV lights and regular cleanings can help keep your home healthy.

  • Ductwork is basically the roadways for your air to travel. If your ductwork has leaks or debris buildup, it causes the system to not work efficiently. The air can't get to its destination properly causing the temperature in your home to not be consistent.

Increased Performance

With ductwork that's custom fit to your home, you'll have the greater overall performance of your HVAC system. The improvement in airflow will help regulate temperatures in rooms throughout the home. Keeping the temperature constant, with fewer temperature swings, prevents your system from overworking. This can be especially beneficial for upstairs rooms or other rooms that typically get hotter or colder than others. Controlled temperatures throughout your home not only increases the performance of your system but promotes a longer life for your HVAC system.

Improved Efficiency

With custom ductwork, air can travel through the ducts more easily, without interruptions. It allows the air to get to you more quickly, without losing energy. This improved efficiency not only reduces a significant amount of waste, but it can save you money on your monthly energy bills. Greater efficiency means that hot or cold air will travel through your ductwork without any interruptions. Proper ductwork, designed specifically for your home, keeps your HVAC system working more efficiently.

Better Air Balance & Flow

One of the biggest issues with ductwork is poor installation. If typical, pre-made ductwork is installed in your home, it may be shoved into place which can cause pinching or collapsing. These problems can seriously interfere with the system’s air balance and flow. Getting ductwork custom designed for your home's specific measurements ensures that air flows without any hindrances. It will also help make sure that the air moving through your ducts gets to your rooms on the shortest possible path. With a custom ductwork system, you can rest assured that your system is perfectly balanced.

Royal Heating & Air specializes in sheet metal fabrication for custom ductwork at the Lake of the Ozarks. Custom ductwork allows for better airflow, distributes air evenly between rooms, and reduces leaks in unwanted areas. It also puts less strain on your HVAC system, allowing it to last longer. For all your HVAC related needs at the Lake, trust "The King of Comfort."

Many people call because they notice that their home not cooling properly. After inspection, they realize the outdoor unit won't turn on.  There are a few troubleshooting options to try before calling a professional on this HVAC emergency.  Make sure your thermostat is working properly, double check to make sure the switch is turned on and that your breakers are all on. If you have tried all of those and still no luck, it is time for a call.

Make sure at the first sign of frozen coils, that you turn off your unit.  Running your unit with frozen coils could end up causing more damage in the long run. One of the most common causes for your unit to freeze up is running the unit at too low of a temperature. If that was not the cause, it could mean damage elsewhere in the unit. Always call a professional to ensure the problem is fixed properly and further damage doesn't develop.

A sign of a clogged condensate line is a leak.  Many people don't realize they have a problem until they notice water coming from their unit. Lines can become clogged periodically and needs regular maintenance to ensure they are clear from debris. Once a leak occurs the damage from water can become costly quick. Make sure your unit is ready with a Spring Maintenance Check.

Units will typically develop some frozen water but for an entire unit to be covered is not normal. Typically this means the unit has an issue with its defrost cycle and a call needs to be made. It is always a good idea to let a professional examine your unit to make sure the unit is operating properly after it freezes up. Sometimes this issue can mean other items are wrong within the unit.

Older furnaces can make loud noises indicating the unit is aging. A furnace blower that is constantly blowing is another sign a furnace is reaching the end of its life cycle. Your technician can help indicate how serious the noise is and if your unit should be repaired or replaced.
