Tips for Staying Healthy This Season!

Fall and winter tend to be seasons that come with colds, the flu, and other general illnesses that no one enjoys. If you are looking for ways to make your home healthier to help reduce the chances of getting sick this season, then today's blog is for you! Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we have several important tips and information to help you improve the family's health this season. Keep reading to learn more!

Cleaning House

Dirty floors could dramatically affect the air quality in your home, particularly if you have a lot of rugs or carpeting. The pet hair, dust, dirt, dander, and dead skin cells that accumulate in your carpet do not stay there indefinitely. As traffic moves through your home, all that debris can get kicked up and start circulating in the air you breathe. For people who suffer from allergies and asthma, this could be a real health hazard.

Changing Filters & Cleaning Ducts

The air filter in your HVAC system is a barrier that helps decrease the amount of dust, hair, and debris circulating in your home. However, if the filter becomes overloaded, it won't be able to do its job as well, and your HVAC system will likely have to work harder as it tries to push air through the clogged filter.

Large amounts of pollen, dust, and dust mites inside the ductwork can cause respiratory issues, even for people without allergies. If your body is dealing with inflammation and consistently trying to clear out allergens from your system, it could have a harder time fighting off other things trying to attack your system.

To help prevent harmful materials from accumulating in the home, change the filters in your HVAC system regularly and make sure to clean the air ducts and units often!

HVAC Maintenance

As equipment ages, it can start to break down, leak fluids or gas, and stop working properly. This is not only frustrating, but could also be very dangerous for you and your family's health. One of the gases that could start leaking from your system is carbon monoxide. This odorless, colorless gas replaces the oxygen in your lungs and can seriously threaten your life.

Additionally, if your HVAC system isn't working efficiently, then the air in your home may not be as clean as it could be. Servicing the HVAC system is important part of airflow in the home. A well-working HVAC system with a new filter can easily catch pollutants and harmful materials that would otherwise be circulating inside the air in your home. Breathe easier with regular HVAC maintenance from Royal Heating & Air!

UV Light System

To help prevent additional bacteria and viruses from spreading around the house through the air ducts, try using a UV light system in your HVAC! Ultra Violet light prevents bacteria from replicating, ridding your home of pesky pathogens that could cause your family to feel "under the weather", or even catch serious illnesses. Royal Heating & Air can help reduce the bacteria in your home by installing a system using UV light directly in the HVAC ductwork! Many of our customers that have installed such systems into their homes have said they notice almost immediately when the bulb burns out because of how the quality of the air changes.

How to Choose Between Gas & Electric

If you are building a home or remodeling this season, then you may be trying to decide between gas and electric as your energy source for the furnace. As the best heating company at the Lake of the Ozarks, Royal Heating & Air is here to help you answer that question! Keep reading to learn the pros and cons of each energy type and which might be right for you.

Maintenance

Because gas furnaces run combustible fuel, they must be regularly checked to ensure they are still operating safely and efficiently. If something goes wrong, it could cause a carbon monoxide leak and seriously threaten your health. Electric systems still need maintenance, but not quite as much as gas furnaces.

Cost

Cost is a very important factor to consider when determining which kind of system you want to install. New systems typically last between 15 and 20 years, sometimes longer if maintained appropriately. That is quite a long-term investment!

Initial Cost

Electric systems win out on initial cost, as they typically do not require any additional construction to install. They can be installed relatively quickly with little to no interruption of your daily life. Gas systems, on the other hand, require proper ventilation, so oftentimes vents and flue pipes must be constructed before a gas furnace can be utilized in your home.

Cost Overall

Even though electric systems are cheaper to install initially, they can cost more money on a monthly basis. Electric is a more costly energy source, so making the larger up-front investment in a gas furnace can be beneficial long-term. This is particularly true in colder climates like ours where the heater runs at a high capacity for many months out of the year.

Environmental Impact

One may think at first that gas furnaces are not environmentally friendly because “gas” is associated often associated in our minds with emissions and bad effects on the air. Electricity seems harmless without digging into how its energy is created. Electricity is primarily fueled by coal, which is not considered environmentally friendly. While producing natural gas does emit some harmful emissions, it burns cleaner than coal. Therefore, gas is considered somewhat more friendly to the environment than electricity.

Heat Rate

Gas and electric heating systems produce heat at different speeds because of the way they operate. Gas furnaces produce the maximum amount of heat possible as soon as the burners start running, so they can heat your home relatively quickly. Electric furnaces must spend time powering up before they begin to heat the air flowing through your home. What this means for you is that, once you make a change on your thermostat, a gas furnace will be able to kick in and warm up your home faster than an electric furnace which will experience somewhat of a delay.

How a Heat Pump Could Help You!

Royal Heating & Air is an expert in all things HVAC, so we are here today to help inform you about heat pumps - how they work, how they could benefit your home, and how we can help install one for you! As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can trust us to bring you the most accurate and helpful information. Keep reading to learn more!

What is a Heat Pump?

Heat Pumps are all-in-one heating and air conditioning systems. They are unique from a traditional furnace in that way – they can also be used for cooling! They reverse the flow and transfer heat from inside the house to the air outside.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Left to its own devices, heat energy travels from high-temperature areas to low-temperature areas. Heat pumps can reverse this flow and pump heat from low-temperature areas to the area you want to heat. They do this by absorbing heat from the outside air, the ground, or water and transferring it into the home.

Heat Pump Maintenance

To keep your heat pump happy, there are a few steps you’ll want to take.

Keep the thermostat set at a constant temperature. Frequently changing it could put an extra burden on your unit. If you do change the temperature throughout the day, try to limit it to twice a day. For example, when you leave work and when you return home.

Choose a temperature range that is manageable for your system – above 65 degrees in the summer and below 70 in the winter. Your system may have difficulty keeping up and could cause a frozen coil or condensation in the home in the winter.

Keep your heat pump as clean as possible. Remove snow build-up, ice, and any debris accumulating on or around the unit. Blockages can cause the system to overwork and begin to malfunction.

Schedule regular maintenance with Royal Heating & Air to ensure your heat pump is working efficiently. Your unit should be checked once a year at a minimum. It’s best to have us come out every season to ensure it is ready for the changing temperatures.

Pros of a Heat Pump

A great benefit to using a heat pump is that they are an energy-efficient way to both heat and cool your home. This is because of the way they function, by drawing heat from the environment as a source of renewable energy. Also, having one unit to service instead of both an air conditioner and a furnace could help cut costs over time.

You can also combine a heat pump with a furnace for a hybrid heat system in climates that get below freezing regularly and for long periods of time.

Potential Cons of a Heat Pump

Some drawbacks to a heat pump are that they are working year-round and can wear out more quickly than an air conditioner. Again, heat pumps are doing the job of both the air conditioner and the furnace.

You may also notice that the system seems like it is always running, or that the air coming through the vent does not feel hot. This is because heat pumps provide a more constant flow of warm air over time, keeping your home at a constant temperature.

Tips to Prepare for Cold Weather

There's no denying that fall is officially here! Temperatures are cooling off and soon the leaves will be changing. Sometime this month, most people will be turning on their heaters to stay warm through the night. Fall is a beautiful season at the Lake, but there are some things you should do to prepare the house and your HVAC system for the colder weather. Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we are here to help you! Keep reading to learn more.

Restock Essentials

Don’t get stuck in the cold without the essentials you need. Before the freezing weather gets here, make sure you have everything you will need to safely move about and get out of the house. Put your shovel and ice scraper where they will be easily accessible. Purchase ice melt to keep on hand. Ice storms don’t always come with fair warning, so having it on hand can be tremendously helpful. It is also a good idea to keep your car stocked with items that will keep you safe a warm in case of an accident while you wait for emergency response… heavy blanket, hand & foot warmers, flashlight, reflective triangle, etc.

Drain Outdoor Water Lines

Call your landscaping company before the ground freezes to drain the water from your irrigation system. Any residual water left in your irrigation system over the winter season will freeze, expand, and likely cause serious damage to the entire system. It is also a good idea to disconnect and drain the hoses around your house.

Mind Your Roof

It can be important to make sure everything is up to standard with your roofing before winter starts. Don’t get stuck with roof leaks from snowmelt because of an overlooked crack or gap. Another way to make sure your roof is protected is to keep your gutters clear from debris. If gutters get overfilled, water can get backed up into your attic or other areas in your home where it shouldn’t be. When this water freezes, it can cause even more damage.

Look for Leaks

Leaks in the seals on your home can be somewhat difficult to notice in the warmer months. However, as the temperature drops, you may notice heat escaping near your windows and doors. Check the seals in these areas to make sure there aren't any cracks or gaps letting warm air escape. There are several tools you can use to help seal off doors and windows. Some are very simple additions to the bottom of the door or window that provide an additional buffer from the elements.

If you are still noticing a lot of heat loss in the winter months, you may want to consider investing in energy-efficient windows. These windows help hold in the warm air (or in the summer, the cool air) so your HVAC system doesn't have to work so hard to keep up. If you aren't sure how efficient your HVAC system is, call Royal Heating & Air and schedule a Home Comfort Check. We will do a complete check of your heater, gas furnace burners, and heating elements and help you find anything that may not be functioning at its optimal level.

Get a Programmable Thermostat

Traditional thermostats simply read the temperature of the room and signal your HVAC system to kick in if it is below (or above in the summer) the temperature you set for your home. A programmable thermostat can learn your patterns by keeping track of how you set the temperature throughout the day. When you're away at work, it can give your HVAC system a break. Do you like to sleep with the air a little cooler? Your programmable thermostat can do that for you automatically! With the freedom to set your programmable thermostat and forget it, you can sit back and relax while it saves you time and potentially even money.

Fall Maintenance Check

Help your heating system out by scheduling regular maintenance checks and inspections. A professional HVAC technician can usually find issues in your unit before they cause bigger problems or system failure. They will inspect the unit's overall condition, motor, electrical components, safety controls, and more. If anything is lagging or has minor damage that could cause issues down the road, your technician will recommend a repair or replacement so you don't end up stuck with a broken heater in the dead of winter.

Now is a great time to check-in on your HVAC, especially your heating system. No one wants to have a heating emergency in the dead of winter. Help prevent emergencies by scheduling regular maintenance on your HVAC system. This can help keep everything running efficiently and safely through the cold season. If you do experience an HVAC emergency, remember that you can always call our team at Royal Heating & Air
