We've got creative, easy ideas to make your Valentine really smile and think you put a lot of work into the holiday this year. Check it out! 

Make Cheesy Kindergarten Valentine's Cards

Yes, it's cheesy! And, yes, that's the whole point! Get a variety pack of construction paper, a box of crayons, and some stickers at the local store. Set out your supplies on the table and put up a cereal box wall to hide your progress. Then spend time giggling together while you craft the perfect, hilarious, super-cheesy Valentine's cards for each other. Bonus points for frilly lace and ribbon!

Challenge Each Other to a Bake-Off

Are you more competitive than cheesy? Challenge each other to a bake-off! Find a recipe on the internet for something neither one of you has ever made before (like chocolate lava cake!). Print off two copies of the recipe and count it down. 3, 2, 1... Bake! You'll have to set some ground rules so the race is fair: No stand mixers or electric beaters, no sabotaging each other's recipes, etc. Let the kids, or a hungry neighbor, be the taste tester to determine who wins! 

Give the Gift of Dates

Sometimes one of the hardest things about going out together after years of being a couple is simply thinking of what to do and making a plan. So, make a plan together this Valentine's Day! There are several awesome resources out there to help inspire couples to have a great time. One of the best that has gained a lot of popularity recently is the Adventure Book series. They plan the dates so you don't have to - just scratch off the next square and have fun! There is both a Couples version and a "spicy" version to choose from. Not in the budget to buy a fancy book? Get a bag of popsicle sticks, a mason jar, and some markers. (You may even have most of that at home already!) Divide the popsicle sticks evenly between you and write creative date ideas on each one and put it in the mason jar. You can even decorate the jar with paint, washi tape, stickers, etc. Now you have a pretty jar full of date ideas so you're never stumped when date night rolls around!

There's an App For That

These days, there seems to be an app for everything. There's even an app that can help couples improve communication, chat about their dreams, and learn more about each other. A great one to try is "Paired". The free version gives you and your significant other one simple question every day. It's not just for couples that have disagreements or struggles! It helps you get to know each other better and have conversations that might not come up otherwise. There are lots of other apps out there too, so take a look and find your favorite!

Cuddle Up & Dream 

Head out to the store, find a big fluffy blanket, choose your favorite snacks, and get ready to settle in on the couch. Cozy up together and talk about your dreams for the future. It may seem ultra-cheesy, but talking about and planning for the future can help strengthen your relationship and give you a sense of shared purpose. Do you someday dream of traveling in Europe together? Do you want to open a small-town bakery or coffee shop when you retire? Make a bucket list together and stick it on the fridge to remind each other of your dreams every day.

Keep the Family Entertained in Sub-Freezing Temperatures!

The temperatures have been really low the past few days! And sometimes it can be hard to think of what to do and how to stay entertained when it's in the single digits outside. Royal Heating & Air is here to keep your house comfortable and warm throughout the icy winter. And today we're bringing you some great ideas on how to stay entertained inside when it's too cold to be outside!

Get Crafty

You might be singing, "Snow, snow, go away!" But, you could embrace the snow theme instead and create paper snowflakes to hang around the house for the snowiest snow day of all! Some of the best materials to use for decorative snowflakes are probably already in your house... Printer paper, paper plates, and coffee filters all make beautiful snowflakes. You could try and follow a snowflake pattern online, or just have fun with it! The key is to make a circle with the material you're using, fold it in half several times over until it looks like a cone, then cut little notches out of the edges... voila! A pretty, unique snowflake of your own! 

Go Classic

When was the last time you played a good old fashioned card game, or even checkers! There are so many fun games out there right now, that it's easy to forget about the simpler games that we used to play. If you don't have a checker board, don't worry... You can use napkins to make the squares and paper plates and plastic cups for the pieces! Or, you could use ALL the decks of cards in the house and build the biggest house of cards you've ever built. Try seeing how many rooms you can build through with your card house castle. Or try to get the tallest tower of cards possible! 

Bake Some Treats

Another fun cold weather activity is to bake together. If you have a favorite baked treat, but you've never tried making it yourself, look up a recipe online and give it a go! Not feeling super adventurous? Sugar cookies are a classic treat... and who doesn't love sneaking some cookie dough before they go in the oven? Plus, baking can make you feel warmer as you watch the cookies bake in the oven. 
(Important Warning: Never use your oven to warm the house!! This can cause carbon monoxide leaks and even house fires.)

Do a Puzzle

If you have an old puzzle you've done before, now might be the perfect time to break it back out and put it together again! Puzzles help pass the time and can be a lot of fun to work on together. If you don't have a puzzle but can get out of the house for a bit, swing by the nearest WalMart and find a big selection of puzzles of all sizes in the toy section. There are also gadgets like the Puzzle Scoop that helps move bigger sections of the puzzle around and the Puzzler Saver that lets you roll the puzzle up on a mat to put away and continue working on later.

What Does Ultraviolet Light Do?

UV Light for Coils

There are two types of UV lights available for your HVAC system. The first kind focuses on the components that are most prone to growing mold and mildew or other allergens and contaminants. About the Owners 

Owners Tom and Katie Royal are high school sweethearts and have two beautiful children, Ryan and Hallie. As natives to the Lake of the Ozarks, Tom and Katie are proud to be involved in the community... volunteering, helping customers, and growing as people and as a business. Royal Heating and Air is a faithful member of a local chapter of Business Networking International, which works to promote and generate referrals for other lake area businesses. As business owners, Katie and Tom sponsor several events around the Lake, are members of Kiwanis, and volunteer countless hours in the community. Katie is also a member of Young Professionals at the Lake and was acknowledged this year in the Top 10 Under 40!

How We Got Started

Royal Heating and Air was started by the Royals in 2011 as a modest company based in their garage with no other employees and one service van. Tom had his first job in HVAC right out of high school, and then he went on to further his education and master the trade. Katie was still in college when they started Royal Heating and Air. She took care of the books and business startup/organization from her college apartment, while Tommy took care of running the business at home. It was their goal from the very beginning to bring truthful, trustworthy service to the lake area, and to be a company that truly cares about their customers. With that mindset, the company started to grow rapidly and never stopped! Today, Royal Heating and Air has 5 vans, 5 crew members plus Katie, and a commercial location in Camdenton.

How to Cut Heating Costs This Winter

With the price of gas going up, heating costs could also be going up for your home if your furnace is not powered by electric. Use Supplemental Heat Sources

If you have an electric fireplace or a personal space heater, using that to help heat the room you're in could help you lower the costs of using the furnace this year. As the price of gas climbs, the cost of using an electric source of heat can be more beneficial. Just be sure to keep flammable items away from the heat source to prevent a fire. Also, be sure to install a carbon monoxide alarm so you stay healthy and safe. 

Additional mini tip: Burning candles can also help raise the temperature of a room in an emergency situation due to the ambient heat from the flame. Just be careful where you place it and don't forget to blow it out when you won't be able to supervise it for an extended amount of time. 

Maintenance Checks

Missing These 5 Preventative Steps Could be Dangerous

Your HVAC system is an important part of keeping your home safe and comfortable year-round. Royal Heating & Air cares about you and your family, and we're here to give you 5 important steps every homeowner should take to keep their HVAC working properly and stay safe. Keep reading to learn them all! 

1. Install a Surge Protector on Your Outdoor Units

Lightning can be a very serious hazard to your HVAC system. A strike at or nearby your home can damage or completely ruin your system’s components or wiring. Of course, your system is hard wired in, so you can’t just plug it into a surge protector. But you can add a whole-house surge protector, which will not only protect your HVAC system but everything that is plugged into your home’s electrical system.

2. Covering Your AC Unit in the Winter

Having your air conditioner covered during the fall can prevent leaves, yard waste, sticks and other debris from getting stuck inside. During the winter, a cover can protect your unit from falling ice as well. Falling ice can cause a lot of damage to your AC unit that could require costly repairs. Additionally, they prevent water from resting directly on the AC unit's coils and freezing, which could damage them. Overall, a cover helps keep the coils cleaner so the unit runs more efficiently the next time your AC unit is turned on. One thing to keep in mind is that a cover could entice animals to make their shelter in your covered AC unit, away from the cold. 

*NOTE: You should only cover an air conditioning unit; do not use a cover if your system is a heat pump. Heat pumps should not be covered. 

3. Keeping the Condensing Coil Clean

As your HVAC system runs, it accumulates dust and dirt in key areas that affect its efficiency, like the condensing coils and air filters. If this is left unchecked, your AC system can lose 5 percent of its operating efficiency each year because of the buildup! This means that your AC won’t be able to cool your house as well as it could if it were clean, costing you more money.

4. Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The temperatures are starting to drop and heaters are getting turned on to keep the house warm through the night already. When you use your furnace, the number one danger of a failure is a carbon monoxide (or CO) leak. This is one of the important reasons why you should schedule heating maintenance early and install carbon monoxide detectors in your home. CO detectors should be installed just like smoke detectors. This means they should be installed in all of the major areas in your home; preferably on every level of the house and outside of each bedroom. It’s also a good idea to test all of your CO and smoke detectors once a month.

5. Schedule HVAC Maintenance Checks

Regular preventative maintenance can not only increase efficiency and lifespan, it also helps you discover and repair things before they lead to bigger problems, more expensive repairs, and potential outages. Bonus: What a Maintenance Check Entails

When one of our technicians arrives for a fall HVAC maintenance check at the Lake of the Ozarks, the first thing that will happen is your system and its components will be inspected. If parts are dirty, they will be cleaned, if there are signs of wear or damage, those will be addressed. Moving parts will be lubricated and if the filter is clogged it will be replaced. The air handler will be checked out to make sure it is in good working condition and cleaned if needed. Airflow efficiency will be measured and your thermostat will also be tested and calibrated if necessary. In addition, the technician will monitor the system while it is on to make sure it is functioning properly and not using more power than it should be. If you have a gas furnace the burner will be cleaned and the heat exchanger checked for signs of cracking or corrosion, too. Any issue that is found will be brought to your attention and discussed along with repair solutions.

How to Choose Between Gas & Electric

If you are building a home or remodeling this season, then you may be trying to decide between gas and electric as your energy source for the furnace. Maintenance

Because gas furnaces run combustible fuel, they must be regularly checked to ensure they are still operating safely and efficiently. If something goes wrong, it could cause a carbon monoxide leak and seriously threaten your health. Electric systems still need maintenance, but not quite as much as gas furnaces.

Cost

Cost is a very important factor to consider when determining which kind of system you want to install. New systems typically last between 15 and 20 years, sometimes longer if maintained appropriately. That is quite a long-term investment!

Initial Cost

Electric systems win out on initial cost, as they typically do not require any additional construction to install. They can be installed relatively quickly with little to no interruption of your daily life. Gas systems, on the other hand, require proper ventilation, so oftentimes vents and flue pipes must be constructed before a gas furnace can be utilized in your home.

Cost Overall

Even though electric systems are cheaper to install initially, they can cost more money on a monthly basis. Electric is a more costly energy source, so making the larger up-front investment in a gas furnace can be beneficial long-term. This is particularly true in colder climates like ours where the heater runs at a high capacity for many months out of the year.

Environmental Impact

One may think at first that gas furnaces are not environmentally friendly because “gas” is associated often associated in our minds with emissions and bad effects on the air. Electricity seems harmless without digging into how its energy is created. Electricity is primarily fueled by coal, which is not considered environmentally friendly. While producing natural gas does emit some harmful emissions, it burns cleaner than coal. Therefore, gas is considered somewhat more friendly to the environment than electricity.

Heat Rate

Gas and electric heating systems produce heat at different speeds because of the way they operate. Gas furnaces produce the maximum amount of heat possible as soon as the burners start running, so they can heat your home relatively quickly. Electric furnaces must spend time powering up before they begin to heat the air flowing through your home. What this means for you is that, once you make a change on your thermostat, a gas furnace will be able to kick in and warm up your home faster than an electric furnace which will experience somewhat of a delay.
