What Does The HVAC SEER Rating Mean?

Understanding the SEER rating on your new HVAC equipment can help you make the right purchasing decision that will impact your overall costs and comfort level of your property.  One component to understanding your new unit and how efficient it will run is with a SEER Rating.  All units come with a SEER rating given by the manufacturer, which helps buyers make an educated decision on which unit will be best for them. Royal Heating & Air is your locally owned and operated full-service HVAC company at Lake of the Ozarks, and we can help you understand what a SEER rating is and how to use it when purchasing your next HVAC equipment. Your heating and cooling company at Lake of the Ozarks has all the details about SEER ratings in this blog.

What does SEER rating mean?

SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio.  It is a common rating system most HVAC manufacturing companies use to display how energy efficient a unit is. The SEER rating is calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the total energy input during the same time frame. The SEER rating will tell you how efficient your unit will be as you use it and how it could affect your costs over time.

What is a good SEER rating?

The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient your unit will be. Legislation has forced manufacturers to produce at a minimum SEER rating to help with overall energy consumption. The minimum SEER requirements differ by geographical regions but in Missouri, the minimum requirement is 13. Bryant models have SEER ratings that range from 13 up to 21. Just like miles per gallon in your car, the higher the system's SEER rating, the more savings you will have.

Should I choose equipment with the highest SEER rating?

Not necessarily. If you have an older property with older equipment that has a SEER rating of 8, then if you upgrade to a SEER rating of 13, you will see a difference. There isn't a certain SEER number that works for everyone. It will depend on your properties needs and budget. Not sure what unit will work for you, give us a call and we can help you navigate through all your choices.

Do lower SEER rating units qualify for rebates?

Rebates change from year to year, so always ask before purchasing your unit to see if it qualifies. We can help you navigate through all your questions before purchasing your next HVAC unit.

The SEER rating on your new HVAC equipment can save you money in the long run and help with the comfort level of your home. Choosing the right unit that matches your needs and budget can be difficult. The first step to making the right choice is by understanding what the SEER rating means. Understanding the efficiency of the unit will help you make the right decision when the time comes. Royal Heating & Air can help you with any questions you may have, just give us a call.

Top Questions Answered About Buying A New HVAC System!

Purchasing a new HVAC unit is an important purchase that may leave you with many questions. As your professional heating and cooling company at Lake of the Ozarks, we know there are a lot of questions involved before finding the right HVAC unit. We are here to help answer some of the frequently asked questions and help you navigate finding the right HVAC unit to fit your needs. As your premier HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we are your resource to help answer any questions you may have.

What size system do I need?

Determining the right size HVAC system is important. If you buy a system that is too large for your home, you are wasting money, but if you buy one that is too small, it won't keep your home at a comfortable temperature. One way is to determine how many BTUS of heating and tons of AC you will need is by using the square footage of your home. There are many charts that can help you factor the right BTUS for your home's square footage. If you are between sizes, we recommend going up in size. If you want to really make sure you choose the right size unit, give us a call. We can ensure you have the exact unit to fit your needs.

What does the SEER number mean?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is a measurement of an air conditioner's cooling capacity to the power input. It is a rating to show how efficient the system will perform and it is given by the manufacturer. When you purchase a unit, typically the higher the SEER rating the more efficient the unit will be. Always choose the higher SEER rating when given a choice.

How long will the installation take?

Each home and situation is different, so it is recommended to get a quote to determine an estimated timeframe for installation.  After the right unit is found for your home, we will let you know if we have it in stock or if it needs to be ordered. The actual installation varies depending on the home and what is needed to install the unit. New homes with the ductwork already installed, it typically takes a full day to install the unit. If we need to add the ductwork, vents and other HVAC equipment, it could take longer depending on the size of the home. On existing homes, we will need to remove the existing unit before installing the new unit, so it could take up to a couple days for the entire process. Existing homes that will require new ductwork or any other additional needs will extend the installation time frame.  Give us a call and we can help answer any questions you need.

Does the system qualify for rebates?

Rebates change from year to year, so always ask before purchasing your unit to see if it qualifies. Most rebates only qualify on existing homes and not for rentals or new construction. We can help you navigate through all your questions before purchasing your next HVAC unit.

Should I replace the entire HVAC equipment at the same time?

If only part of your system goes out, you don't have to replace the entire system. However, we recommend when you replace one you should replace both.  Most of the time your AC unit and furnace were installed at the same time, which means if one goes out it won't be long before the rest of the unit wears out. If you are spending the money to replace part of the unit, you might as well have peace of mind that your entire system is updated and running efficiently.  You will save money in the long run with a more efficient unit as well as by only having technicians come out once versus two different times to work on your HVAC system.
