Should I Get a Backup Generator in 2021?

Are you thinking about whether or not you should get a backup generator this year? If you have ever experienced a power outage in the middle of using electricity, then you know how frustrating it can be. When the power goes out, Royal Heating & Air knows it can not only be frustrating, it can also be dangerous. Right now the "real feel" temperature is negative 4 degrees Fahrenheit. BRR! If your power were to go out in an ice storm, would your family be safe after several hours without heat? Power generators can make all the difference. Keep reading to learn all about them!

What is a Backup Generator?

Backup power generators can provide electricity as a secondary source when the usual source has gone out for whatever reason. If you live in a rural area, you may find that this happens quite frequently. All it takes is a tree branch falling onto an electrical line and causing it to short out, turning the power off for everyone down the line.

What Can a Generator Power?

The answer to this question will largely depend on the size and quality of the generator that you buy. Some generators are large and powerful enough to power your whole home during an outage. Other generators can power just what you need during emergencies.

Some of the most important items in your home to power include the refrigerator and any deep freezers you own, the HVAC system, and your water source. If you lose power to the refrigerator and freezer, your food will likely start to go bad very quickly. This can cost a lot of money to replace and is a major inconvenience to dispose of and completely replace all your food and drinks. The HVAC system is important to power as well, especially in times of extreme weather. In the middle of summer, the untamed heat and humidity could be dangerous for small children and the elderly. In the winter, power to the heater could mean life or death. Water is also a very important resource to have access to. Depending on how your water is set up, it may need electricity to power the pump that provides the necessary pressure for it to flow to your home.

Is a Backup Generator the Same as a Portable One?

In short, no. While they both provide power, a portable generator is meant to be used for smaller items that need to be powered outdoors and don't have access to an electrical outlet. A bounce house at a carnival would be the perfect example. These must be refilled and only last for a certain amount of time. For that reason, they are not a good option for powering your home if the electricity goes out. A home backup generator has significantly more power and can be set to keep certain essentials running until the electricity returns.

Work-From-Home Considerations

If your company has moved to a permanent work-from-home status, then you may need more than just a basic generator. Power outages are unpredictable, and they don't strike at times that are convenient for you. If a 4-hour power outage could derail your work day and cause projects to be late, then you may need to consider a power generator that will keep your computer system up and running for the duration of the outage.
