FAQs About Variable Speed Technology

Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks. We use advanced tools and technology to help keep your systems running efficiently. One of those advanced methods is Variable Speed Technology. Due to industry-wide requirements, all new HVAC systems use some form of variable speed technology, but some units use a more advanced version of the technology than others. Read on to learn more about how variable speed technology works and the advanced options you can find in some systems. Call Royal Heating & Air to find out more about the systems we can install for you!

How Does it Work?

Variable Speed Technology allows HVAC systems to adapt to the home's temperature needs and adjust the output accordingly. Without variable speed technology, an HVAC system runs either at 100% on, or is off completely. This can use a lot of energy because your system constantly has to rev up to reach temperature after it has been off. The variable speed technology's purpose is to function at multiple capacity levels. This technology may be able to help lower your utility bills because it uses less electricity than a conventional motor.

On very hot summer days, the compressor can operate at 100% capacity to cool your house down to the desired temperature. When the temperature is milder, it can operate at a lower capacity (as low as 30%) to keep your home comfortable while saving on energy.

Variable speed technology is also very helpful in the winter, as it can help prevent the feeling that cold air is blowing through the vents. This works because the varying speeds allow it to control the amount of air blowing through the vents and into your home.

Energy Efficiency

When your HVAC system turns on from being shut off for a while, it sucks a lot of energy to reheat your home to the proper temperature. Variable speed technology allows your system to preserve energy by running continuously. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy reports that a motor that uses variable speed technology may use as much as 75% less power than a base model motor. Variable Speed Advances

More advanced systems can sense the amount of air that is moving through the system and adjust to compensate for any inadequacies. For example, if you have a dirty air filter, if the air ducts are too small or too large, or if there are other issues within your HVAC, the variable speed technology can adjust the amount of airflow to keep your home feeling comfortable regardless of what issues your HVAC system may be experiencing.
