How to Protect Your HVAC System from Summer Storms

Here in the Midwest, rain showers are not limited to just springtime.  Summer can bring its fair share of pop-up storms and that can be an issue for your HVAC system, especially if it is aged or worn out.  Even a new system can be at risk from damaging winds or electrical surges.  At Royal Heating and Air, we have a few tips to help you prepare and protect your HVAC system from storms.

Wind & Hail

The first threat to your HVAC system that we are going to talk about is wind and hail.  When the wind kicks up during a storm it can stir up debris of all sizes (or hail) and torpedo it against your outdoor condensing unit. Your condenser is made of tiny and delicate fins that can be easily bent or dented by flying debris.  If this happens it can seriously affect how efficiently your system functions. If you notice dents or dings on your outside condensing unit after a storm, it is recommended that you have an HVAC technician at the Lake of the Ozarks come out and inspect your system to see if repairs are needed.

Preventatively, it is a good idea to do what you can to keep your trees trimmed and your yard free of debris.  In an extreme situation, it may be best to shut off your HVAC system and cover it securely just until the storm passes.  However, it is important to uncover it before using your system again and before moisture and mold has a chance to accumulate.

Lightening

Lightening can be the most serious hazard to your HVAC system during a summer storm.  A strike at or nearby your home can damage or completely ruin your system’s components or wiring.  Of course, your system is hard wired in, so you can’t just plug it into a surge protector.  But you can add a whole-house surge protector, which will not only protect your HVAC system but everything that is plugged into your home’s electrical system.

Otherwise, your safest bet is to shut your thermostat off during an electrical storm and turn off the breaker to your system until the storm has passed. If your system is on during a power surge and the electricity goes off, and your air conditioner does not start back up when the electricity resumes, call Royal Heating and Air.  We prioritize emergency HVAC services the Lake of the Ozarks for our clients and will be happy to come out and help.

Rain

Rain and moisture shouldn’t be an issue for a healthy HVAC system, but if one is old or worn out and has leaks or cracks where rain and humidity can get into moisture sensitive components, it is possible that normal rainstorms could cause problems.  You can help avoid unwanted surprise by scheduling a regular maintenance check with a reputable HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks.

While you can’t control the weather, you can predict and prevent some of the risks to your HVAC system caused by summer storms.  We know how miserable it can get in the summer if your air conditioner goes out and as the king of comfort, we want you be able to weather the storms safely and comfortably.  For all your HVAC services at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can count on Royal Heating and Air.

5 DIY Tips Before Calling Your HVAC technician if Your Air conditioner is Not Keeping Up.

Royal Heating and Air knows it is no fun finding yourself in the heat of summer when your air conditioner is not keeping up.  It can even be dangerous if it quits all together.  Because your HVAC system gets used more during this season, it is a good idea to know some things to look for if your system is not working the way it should.  Here are a few DIY tips from the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks.

1) Electricity.

Just to be sure, double check that the electricity in your home is working and that no breakers have blown. If you find there is a blown breaker, and it blows again after you reset it, you will want to call an electrician and your favorite HVAC technician at the Lake of the Ozarks.

2) Thermostat.

Sometimes it is not the air conditioner, it is the thermostat that is malfunctioning.  If your thermostat has a battery (most do) eliminate that variable, replace it with a new battery.  Then turn down the temperature on the thermostat 5-10 degrees and see if the AC kicks on.  If not, the problem may be with the thermostat, not the HVAC unit.

3) Filter.

If the airflow is restricted in your HVAC system, that can cause it to be inefficient in cooling the air in your home.  It can also result in your entire system running more or working harder which in turn can cause other problems.  Check your filter and see that it is clean and properly in place.  Royal Heating and Air suggests checking your filter monthly and replacing it when you notice it is coated with dust or debris.  You will probably need to change it more often if you have pets in the home or if you live in a dusty area like near a gravel road.

4) Clean and Clear.

If weeds and greenery sprout up around your outside condenser unit it can have the same effect as a dirty filter.  Those plants restrict airflow through the condenser coils and limit their cooling potential.  It is best to keep a 3-foot-wide swath clear around your outside unit.  If you notice that the coils are dirty, it is recommended to clean those too.  You can use a garden hose (never under pressure) or call us for an HVAC maintenance check at the Lake of the Ozarks.

5) Vents.

Although it seems counterintuitive, closing vents to avoid heating areas of the house you don’t use will not help make it easier for your air conditioner to keep up.  It can actually cause pressure problems and lead to your HVAC system working harder.  So, take a quick look at all your vents and air returns and see that they are open.  Also, try not to place furniture or other objects in the way where they can restrict airflow.

If after checking all these things you still find your air conditioner is not performing up to par, it is time to call an HVAC professional at the Lake of the Ozarks.  In fact, for extra peace of mind you could schedule preventative maintenance with us and one of our technicians will inspect your entire HVAC system and make sure it is in great shape and running at optimum efficiency.  At Royal Heating and Air, we are proud to be the King of Comfort and we want to keep you comfortable all summer long.  For all your HVAC services at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can count on Royal Heating and Air.

Health, Comfort, and Savings - What HVAC Maintenance Can Do for You!

Home is a place where you should feel comfortable, relaxed, happy, and safe. As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, Royal Heating & Air knows how to keep keep your house feeling great throughout the year... HVAC maintenance! Don't believe us? Proper HVAC maintenance can help save you money in the long run, promote a healthier home environment, and make the house a more comfortable place to spend your time. Keep reading to learn more and find out how!

Health

As equipment ages, it can start to break down, leak fluids or gas, and stop working properly. This is not only frustrating, but could also be very dangerous for you and your family's health. One of the gases that could start leaking from your system is carbon monoxide. This odorless, colorless gas replaces the oxygen in your lungs and can seriously threaten your life.

Additionally, if your HVAC system isn't working efficiently, then the air in your home may not be as clean as it could be. Servicing the HVAC system and regularly changing the air filter is important part of airflow in the home. A well-working HVAC system with a new filter can easily catch pollutants and harmful materials that would otherwise be circulating inside the air in your home. Breathe easier with regular HVAC maintenance from Royal Heating & Air!

Comfort

When everything is in good working order, your HVAC system can keep the house more comfortable and will consume less energy. You don't want to wait until it's unbearably hot or way too cold before you call your local HVAC technician. Scheduling preventative maintenance can help catch any issues before they become a major problem.

Savings

Scheduling regular maintenance on your HVAC system is important in keeping your unit functioning well in the long-term. While no unit can last forever, regular maintenance can help extend the life of your HVAC and delay the time when you have to fully replace it. The best HVAC technicians at the Lake of the Ozarks can help find and fix any small problems in the system before it gets worse and costs a lot more money. A well-working HVAC system also consumes less energy while keeping your home at comfortable temperatures, so you can save even more.

HVAC at the Lake of the Ozarks

Regular maintenance should be performed on your system at least twice a year with the major changes in seasons. This will help keep your HVAC system running efficiently so you can save money, breathe easier, and feel more comfortable at home. Give us a call at Royal Heating & Air and schedule your maintenance check! We look forward to helping you and your family stay happy and comfortable, in this season and every season.

3 Reasons to Have Your HVAC System Regularly Maintained

You rely on your air conditioner to keep your home comfortable all summer long. While it may seem like summer is over since Labor Day is past, there’s still plenty of time for warm temperatures. As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we know how important it is to catch any hiccups that may occur with your HVAC unit before it becomes a major issue – like your air conditioner breaking down completely. We offer a unique maintenance service where we come and check out your unit and entire system to make sure it is running in tip top shape. To keep your home comfortable year round, learn why you should schedule your preventative HVAC maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks today!

1) Avoid Major Repairs

Many big HVAC system repairs could be prevented before a major mishap occurs. Don’t get to the point where your home doesn’t have air or heat to call the experts. If you notice a funny sound or your unit not working like it used to, it’s best to have your system checked out. Major repairs can cost major money and it’s best to pay for a small preventative maintenance repair before shelling out for a completely new system install. Help catch an issue before it becomes detrimental to your system.

2) Keep Your Unit Running Smoothly

An efficient system can consume less energy and keep your home comfortable, just like you like it! Preventative maintenance helps ensure your unit is working like it should and is running as smoothly and efficiently as possible. We can check out all the little parts that work together to keep your unit working properly. A minor issue can put strain on other parts of your HVAC unit, which in turn may lead another more major part to fail. Having a professional keep tabs on your unit can help prevent a little issue turning into something big.

3) Ensure Air Filter is in Good Shape

Your air filter is an important part of your system as it traps air particles, hair, and other contaminants from spreading throughout your home. Filters can fill up more quickly than others and finding the right filter for your unique and living conditions is important. A professional can help install the right filter for your specific unit. Keeping your air filter changed out on a regular basis allows more air contaminants to be trapped and the air in your home to be cleaning for you and your family to breathe.

Having your HVAC system maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks should be done two times a year. This can help ensure your unit is running like it should, doesn’t have any potential dangers lurking, and has a fresh air filter for the upcoming season. It’s best to have these maintenance checks performed in the fall and spring to help make sure your unit is ready for the busy winter and summer seasons ahead of the maintenance check. Contact Royal Heat & Air today to schedule your regular HVAC maintenance check! We look forward to providing a reliable system you and your family can count on!

Keeping Your Home Cool Without Overworking Your AC

The summer months at the Lake of the Ozarks are hot! There's no better feeling than walking into a nice cool home after being out in the heat. Constantly blasting your AC though, can cause high electric bills and can shorten your HVAC system's life. Keep reading for a few ideas on how to keep your home cool without overworking your Lake of the Ozarks AC system.

1. Switch Out Your Light Bulbs.

Incandescent bulbs waste about 90% of their energy through the heat that they emit. By switching to LED or CFL bulbs, you'll not only be able to keep your home cooler, but also lower your electric bill.

2. Put Ice in Front of a Fan.

Fans, in conjunction with your AC, are a great way to get cool air circulating throughout your home. Fill a bowl with ice or grab an ice pack to sit in front of a large fan. This will help keep the room much cooler and get that cool air circulating around the room, allowing the AC to work less.

3. Cook Outdoors Instead of Inside.

Appliances, such as your oven and range, emit quite a bit of heat. Grilling out during the summer months is not only fun, but also a way to keep your home cooler. Cook outside when possible or prepare meals that don't require cooking.

4. Cool Down From the Inside Out.

Cooling down your body temperature can make it feel cooler inside without actually changing the temperature of the air around you. Drink plenty of ice water throughout the day, and apply a cold cloth to your neck and wrists. Drinking a glass of cold water before bed will lower your body temperature and reduce the likelihood of you sweating during the night.

5. Swap Out Your Bedding.

During the hot summer months, consider swapping out your bedding. Cotton sheets breathe easier and stay cooler than flannel, fleece or polyester linens. Cotton bedding will also transfer moisture away from the skin. Buckwheat pillows are also cooler, as the buckwheat hulls have a naturally occurring air space between them. They also won't hold in your body heat like conventional pillows.

6. Close the Blinds During the Day.

By simply closing your blinds to keep the sun's rays from entering your home, you can keep your home cooler and allow your AC system to work a little less hard. Most of the unwanted heat during the summer months comes from your windows. Therefore, utilizing blinds and curtains can lower the temperature inside your home drastically.

7. Open the Windows at Night.

The Lake area typically cools off quite a bit during the night hours. Take advantage of this cooler time of day by opening the windows to let the naturally chilled air flow indoors and lower the temperature in your home. Just make sure that you close them in the morning before it gets too hot.

Another way to ensure your home stays cool and your system isn't overworked is to schedule regular maintenance with your Lake of the Ozarks HVAC company. Keeping your unit clean and changing the filters regularly will help in the effort of keeping your equipment working efficiently. For all your AC needs at the Lake, give Royal Heating and Air a call at 573-480-4313.

5 Tips for Improving Your Indoor Air Quality

Not only is it important for the air inside your home to be a comfortable temperature, you want the quality of the air to be good as well. While some things may be out of your control, there are little things you can do around your home to improve the quality of the air that you and your family are breathing in on a daily basis. Keep reading for tips to improve your indoor air quality from Royal Heating & Air.

1. Keep Your Floors Clean.

One of the easiest ways to keep pollutants out of the air in your home is to clean your floors regularly. Chemicals and allergens easily settle and accumulate on the floors of your home. From carpet to tile or wood flooring, you want to keep them all clean. By vacuuming often, you reduce concentrations of lead, brominated fire-retardant chemicals (PBDEs), pollen, pet dander, and dust mites. Mopping the floors picks up the dust that's left after vacuuming. To keep your floors from getting too dirty in the first place, be sure to put a doormat down for people to wipe their shoes on. You can even ask people to take their shoes off at the door to cut down on the pollutants brought into your home.

2. Assess the Chemical Use in Your Home.

Consistently using chemicals inside your home is not good for your health. While keeping your home clean is essential to improving your indoor air quality, how you complete that cleaning is also important. When possible, try to use all natural cleaning solutions such as vinegar and lemon. Industrial cleaners leave a residue that affects your air quality. Many household products, cleaning and otherwise, contain volatile organic compounds. You can reduce your exposure to VOCs by: purchasing natural cleaning products and air fresheners, avoiding aerosol sprays, purchasing fragrance-free or all-natural soaps and detergents, using soy or beeswax candles instead of petroleum-based wax, and using houseplants known to filter the air.

3. Improve Your Ventilation Systems.

Poor ventilation in your home can directly impact indoor air quality. Air flow is crucial for good indoor air quality. You can easily improve the airflow in your home by: opening a window, operating attic & ceiling fans, hiring a professional to clean and inspect the ducts in your home, and running exhaust fans when you cook, clean or bathe. Airtight homes, while "energy-efficient," tend to have poor indoor air quality because the pollutants can't escape, and fresh air isn't introduced.

4. Reduce the Humidity in Your Home.

Dust mites and mold, both contributors to poor air quality, love moisture. Controlling the humidity levels in your home is another way to improve your indoor air quality. Keeping the humidity level inside your home around 30-50% will help keep these, and other allergens, under control. Using a dehumidifier is one of the best ways to monitor and control the humidity levels inside your home. Learn more about this in our blog titled, "Benefits of Using a Dehumidifier in Your Home."

5. Keep Your AC Clean.

Keeping your HVAC unit clean is another great way to improve your indoor air quality, and you're giving your system a longer life in the process. Changing the air filter on your HVAC system monthly is one of the easiest things you can do to keep your system clean and running efficiently. The purpose of an air filter is to keep pollutants out of your air. It needs to be clean in order to do it's job. It's important to keep the rest of your system clean as well. Be sure to check the coils and drip pan regularly too.

Many of these steps are things you can accomplish on your own, but when it comes to a properly working HVAC system, you know who to call. Our Lake of the Ozarks HVAC company is here for all your heating and cooling needs. We want to help you with improving your indoor air quality by ensuring your system is in tip-top shape. How to Keep Your HVAC System Mold Free

During the hot summer months in Missouri, humidity can become an issue. Unfortunately, high humidity levels in your home and/or in your Lake of the Ozarks HVAC system can lead to mold growth. Mold thrives in conditions of high humidity levels and warm temperatures. These conditions are created during the heating/cooling process of your HVAC system. Below are a few tips for how to keep your HVAC system mold free.

1. Ensure Your HVAC System is the Proper Size for Your Home.

Not only does your HVAC system work to either heat or cool your home, it also dehumidifies the air. If your system is too large for your space, it will kick on and off so quickly that it doesn't have time to dehumidify correctly. This causes excess moisture in your HVAC system because there's not enough time for the dehumidifying process to be completed properly. Humidity levels of 60% or higher inside your system create an environment where mold can easily begin to grow. An undersized system can also cause humidity issues, as they are overworked and can't keep up with both heating/cooling and dehumidifying. Mold in your HVAC system doesn't just impact the system itself, but also the indoor air quality of your home.

2. Keep Your HVAC System Clean & Maintained.

Just like with any other piece of equipment, you need to keep your HVAC system regularly maintained. Not only will this help your system last longer, but it will decrease the likelihood that mold develops in your system. Make sure that you change your AC filters regularly, which is typically monthly during the hot summer months. In addition, you'll want to check regularly for leaks. Be sure to drain any excess water you find and clean the drain pans regularly. Standing water in your drip tray can lead to active mold growth. Last, but not least, clean your air ducts regularly as well.

3. Invest in a Dehumidifier for Your Home.

Dehumidifiers work with your HVAC system and help take some of the pressure off of it. Anytime there's excess moisture in your home, which is a common problem during the humid summer months, you'll want to consider running a dehumidifier. One of the main benefits of running a dehumidifier in your home is that it prevents mold growth, in your home and in your HVAC system. By removing a lot of the water from the air before it even makes it to the HVAC system, the dehumidifier is allowing the HVAC system to work less hard to dehumidify the air. Learn more about this in our recent blog titled, "Benefits of Using a Dehumidifier in Your Home."

4. Keep Your Windows and Doors Closed.

While it may seem like a great idea to open your windows and let a breeze in on a hot summer day, you may want to think twice about that. Keeping the humidity outdoors will not only decrease the humidity levels in your home, but it will allow your system to work more efficiently. This will result in less condensation build up inside your system, with reduces the chances of mold development. In addition, the less hard your system has to work, the longer its going to last you. Therefore, it's a good idea to keep your windows and doors closed on hot, humid summer days.

5. Have Your HVAC System Serviced Regularly.

Last, but certainly not least, be sure to have your HVAC system serviced regularly by a professional HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks. Not only does this ensure your system is performing at its optimal efficiency, making it last longer, but it will help prevent mold growth. Your HVAC contractor will be able to see if there's any excess moisture in your system and help you remedy the situation. The best way to prevent mold growth, or any other issues with your system, is to monitor it regularly.

7 Ways to Keep Your Cooling Costs Down During the Hot Summer Months

While summer may be filled with fun on the water and family vacations, it also means hot and humid weather. After being out in the sun, you want to come home to a nice, refreshingly cool home, right? Unfortunately, those cool indoor temperatures don't always come cheap. Royal Heating & Air is here to help you keep your home cool this summer without breaking the bank! Below are several things you can do to reduce your cooling costs this summer.

1. Service Your AC System.

If you didn't have your system serviced before the summer heat kicked-in, now's the time to do so! It's recommended that you have your HVAC system checked by a professional at least twice per year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Hiring the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks for preventative maintenance will keep your system working efficiently. Your contractor will clean the coils, check the connections, make sure the refrigerant is at proper levels and check for anything else that might not be working properly or could cause issues down the road.

2. Adjust Your Thermostat.

When you're hot, one of the first things you're tempted to do is go bump your AC down by a couple degrees. Many people don't realize that just a couple degrees can make a huge difference in energy costs. Always set your thermostat to the highest temperature you can stand to save the most money. Studies have found that each degree a thermostat is set above 75°F could save 10-15% in energy. Many experts actually recommend setting it at 78°F on hot days, and anywhere from 82-85°F when you're not home. Installing a programmable thermostat is a great way to maintain energy efficient temperatures in your home.

3. Use Your Ceiling Fans.

Did you know that using a ceiling fan can offer energy savings up to 40%? While fans don't actually cool the air, they make it feel cooler by moving it, pulling body heat away from your skin. Fans use roughly 1/60th the energy of an air conditioner, so using both at the same time and raising your thermostat a couple degrees is an energy-efficient way to cool your home on hot summer days. Just make sure that your ceiling fan has angled blades that are set to push the air downward at you.

4. Cover Your Windows.

While windows are great for letting natural light in, they also let heat in during the summer months. That extra heat makes your AC system work even harder to cool off the room. Invest in some blinds, curtains or other devices to keep sunlight from entering your home. Another great idea is to plant shrubs, particularly on the south and west sides of your home, in front of the windows to help block the sunlight and absorb some of the heat so it doesn't enter your home.

5. Cook Outside.

One of the largest culprits of extra heat in your home is the use of the oven/stove. Consider using your oven/stove less during the summer months and grill out instead. This can help keep your energy costs down because the AC doesn't have to work extra hard to compensate for that extra heat in the kitchen. Alternatively, you can use other appliances that throw off less heat such as a crockpot.

6. Seal Your Windows.

Poorly sealed windows and doors will leak air, which makes your AC work harder to keep your home cool. Caulking leaks or cracks and weather stripping your windows will prevent the cool air from escaping your home through the windows and doors. In addition, make sure that your home is properly insulated to keep the cool air in and the hot air out.

7. Replace Your Air Filter.

One home maintenance task that easily gets overlooked is regularly replacing your AC's air filter. This is especially important during the hot summer months, and even more so if you have pets. Air filters keep your HVAC system running smoothly by preventing dust from blocking your vents and promoting air circulation. If the filters are dirty, your system will have to work harder to circulate air. Luckily, this is an easy and inexpensive task.

Our Lake of the Ozarks HVAC maintenance company is here to ensure your system is ready for the summer heat! If you have your system checked this spring, you should consider having us come out and take a look at it as soon as possible. We're also here for all your emergency service needs. Make Sure Your HVAC is Prepared for Summer Vacation

Kids are officially out of school and summer will soon be kicking off. That means summer vacations are right around the corner. While packing and preparing for your vacation is important, Royal Heating & Air knows that you don’t want to overlook your HVAC system. The best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks has a few tips to help you get your HVAC system ready for your upcoming vacation.

Check the Air Filter

It's best to check the air filter at least once a month and change it as necessary. It's important to check the air filter before you leave for an extended period of time. When filters are clogged with debris, airflow is restricted, which causes your HVAC system to work harder to keep your home comfortable. When you're away from your home, you can't notice the signs of restricted airflow.  Those signs include:
  • HVAC system running more often or for longer periods of time
  • Loud noises
  • Warm air being supplied from the vents
  • Excessive build-up of dust and dirt

Adjust Your Thermostat

Contrary to popular belief, you should run your AC while you're away. When the HVAC doesn't engage for long periods of time, your home is susceptible to moisture buildup and mold development. The HVAC system is designed to run regularly, so when it doesn't engage for long periods of time, it can actually damage your equipment and shorten its lifespan. When you're away, raise the thermostat no more than 5 degrees. A programmable thermostat can help you maximize efficiency even while you're away.

Check the Outside Unit

Before leaving, it's important to make sure the outside unit is taken care of. Ensure there is no debris around the outside unit that would restrict airflow. You should also make sure nearby shrubbery is well trimmed and the area around your unit is clear of any leaves, limbs or grass clippings. While clearing away any debris, take the time to ensure your outside unit is not damaged or leaking. If any issues are spotted, contact a professional HVAC repair company at the Lake of the Ozarks. If the issues go without repair, it could make them worse, and you don't want to return from vacation to a catastrophic HVAC failure.

Close the Windows & Curtains

Before taking off, ensure all the windows are locked and closed, not only for safety reasons, but to help with energy efficiency. You should also ensure the windows and door frames are sealed up to ensure the cool air stays in while you're away. Closing curtains and blinds will help regulate the temperature of your home while on vacation.

Be Prepared for Potential Storms

Thunderstorms are a common occurrence in the Midwest during the summer months, so make sure your home is prepared for any that may pop up before you leave for your trip. If there are any low hanging limbs or unsecured structures near your home or AC unit, have them removed before you leave. Although you can't control nature, it's important to be prepared and do what you can to avoid returning home to a storm-damaged HVAC system.

Open Your Vents

HVAC systems are designed to maximize airflow, so even in rooms that are hardly used, all vents should be open. Before leaving on vacation, check every room to ensure all the vents are open and clear.

Vacuum Your Home

While you're away, dust and allergens will collect, so it's important for your home's air quality to vacuum before leaving for vacation. It’s also nice coming home to a clean house instead of having to do household chores when returning.
