Enjoy Cleaner Air with HVAC UV Lights!

Indoor air quality is a hot topic these days. There are a lot of simple ways to help improve the air quality in your home a little, like getting air purifying plants, changing the filter regularly, keeping floors and upholstery clean... But have you ever thought about installing a UV light system in your HVAC? Royal Heating and Air believes this is one of the most effective ways to remove harmful substances from the air in your home. As the best heating and cooling company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we know the ins and outs of HVAC systems at the Lake. Read on to learn more about UV light systems and why they could be the perfect solution for your lake house!

What is UV Light?

UV light, or ultraviolet light, is not visible to the human eye. You are likely very familiar with the effects of UV light from the sun when you get a sunburn in the summer. This electromagnetic radiation has enough energy to break chemical bonds, which is why it is good for killing bacteria and other harmful substances. This is also why it's important to wear sunscreen and sunglasses when you're out in direct sunlight.

How Does it Work?

The UV light rays deactivate bacteria and viruses so that they are no longer able to multiply. That is why this is such an efficient, clean way to improve the air quality in your home. Rather than adding chemicals to the air like other cleaning methods, the UV light destroys any pathogens that it comes into contact with. Because the light remains on 24/7, the air quality in your home is protected at all times. The UV light system is so effective, that some users noticed almost immediately when the light burnt out as the air became less clean.

What are the Benefits?

There are several benefits to having a UV light system installed in your HVAC. Most importantly, it helps increase the air quality in your home. There are a few other great benefits, however. Read on to learn more!

1) Smells

Not only does the UV light reduce the number of bacteria in the air, but it also reduces smells and odors. As bacteria, viruses, and even mold grows in your HVAC system, it can start to smell bad. Think about the moldy food you found in the back of the refrigerator... gross. Having UV light working for you to keep the air ducts free from contaminants can help improve the smell in your home.

2) Allergens

If someone in your household suffers from allergies or asthma, air quality is extremely important to their quality of life. A UV light system can significantly help with this issue by eradicating common allergens in the duct work. You will notice that it feels easier to breathe and your lungs are less constricted than before.

3) Sickness

Are your family members sick all the time? It may be due to a medical condition, but it also could be because of a buildup of bacteria, viruses, and mold in your duct work. Breathing these pathogens in every day is harmful to anyone's health. Your body may get tired of fighting off so many potential illness and infections and become more vulnerable. One sleepless night or one stressful day could be all it takes for your immune system to be overloaded and no longer able to keep up. A UV light system can remove these harmful materials from your air ducts and ease the burden on your body to constantly fight off germs in the air.

The Mini Spilt System - Is it Right for Me?

If you are remodeling your home and considering going to a central HVAC system instead of keeping your old window units, a mini-split system could be the perfect solution for you and your home! Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC Company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we are here to help you with all your heating and cooling needs. We are excited today to talk about mini-split systems and how they could help your home be more efficient and comfortable year-round. Read on to learn more!

What is a Mini-Split System?

A mini-split system is comprised of an indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor. During the summer while cooling your home, the warm air in the house is pulled in by the indoor unit which then blows it over cold evaporator coils. The heat absorbed by the coils is brought to the outside unit and released there, away from your home.

Regular HVAC systems function almost the same way, but in a longer and less efficient process. The air is pulled through duct work to the indoor unit that is typically tucked away somewhere in the home. It is cooled by the same process there and then pushed back out through duct work to the rooms in your house.

What are the Benefits?

Efficiency

Mini-splits are more efficient than central heating and cooling units because they are cooling the room where they are located. The air doesn't have to travel long distances through duct work and use up energy.

More Control

This system allows you to control the feel of each room of your home with the ideal temperature for that space. With a big home, this can be especially convenient. Leave the less-visited areas of your home one temperature, while keeping the areas where you spend most of your time at another.

No Duct Work Necessary

If your home currently has window units and you are looking for a better, more efficient system, a mini-split is a great choice. The installation is relatively simple, only requiring a small hole to connect to the outdoor unit. This could save you a lot of money that would have to be spent on duct work installation for a central HVAC system.

Are There Any Cons?

Yes, as with nearly any system on the market, there are a few cons to consider before making your final decision.

Upfront Cost

The upfront cost for a mini-split system can sometimes be higher than a central HVAC unit. (This does not include new duct work.) While it can save you money in the long term, it could be important to do some calculations on how the costs will add up and whether or not it's the right choice for you.

Maintenance

Mini-split systems do require more maintenance than central HVAC systems. The filters have to be washed out monthly or the system could fail and require hundreds of dollars of repairs.

Aesthetics

Some people are concerned that the mini-split system won't fit well in their home because the indoor units have to be located somewhere visible and they cannot be covered up. Most buyers, however, don't notice the units after they have been installed and enjoy the convenience and efficiency they bring.

It’s Cold! Should I Turn the Emergency Heat On?

Winter weather is on its way, and there are a few things you should know about the Emergency Heat setting on your thermostat before the temperatures drop. Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we have the tips to help you understand your HVAC system and to help you get prepared for the coming cold. Read on to learn more and schedule your winter maintenance to make sure everything is running smoothly.

What is Emergency Heat?

If you have a heat pump, Emergency Heat is a setting that your thermostat turns too when the temperature drops below approximately 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures this cold make it difficult for your heat pump to draw enough ambient heat to warm your home. For that reason, emergency heat is considered a secondary, or auxiliary, source of heat.

When emergency heat kicks in, the heat pump gets bypassed for the secondary source, which can be powered by electricity, natural gas, or oil. Because of this, it can cost quite a bit more money to run your HVAC system on the emergency heat setting. If your outdoor unit is an air conditioner instead of a heat pump, your “emergency heat” is always on since you only have one source of heat.

When to Use Emergency Heat?

In an emergency! This heat source is aptly named because it should only be used in case of an emergency, like if the heat pump is damaged or has an internal failure. If this happens, take advantage of the emergency heat setting and call your local HVAC technician to come out for a maintenance check to see what is going on. This setting is only meant to be used temporarily as it can put a strain on your system and cost significantly more than the standard setting.

How do I Know if My Emergency Heat is On?

Most thermostats have a red indicator light that turns on when the emergency heat source kicks in. So it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your HVAC system and check for the red indicator light. You might see the red indicator light come on for a short time while the system is in defrost mode, which is normal. If it doesn’t turn off and it is above 35 degrees outside, then it is a good idea to call a professional HVAC company to come out and check on your unit to ensure it is working properly.
