UV Light Systems for Cold & Flu Season

Cold and flu season is upon us! If you are looking for ways to help improve your indoor air quality and stay as healthy as possible, Royal Heating & Air may have a solution for you! As the best heating and cooling company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we do whatever we can to help you keep your home comfortable and safe year-round. One of the ways we can help do this is by installing an ultraviolet light system into your HVAC. Ultraviolet light can prevent harmful materials from growing, replicating, and causing illnesses. You can harness this technology in your own home and destroy bad substances inside your HVAC system before they circulate in your home and make you sick. Keep reading to learn more about how this can help you!

Why Use UV Light?

There are several benefits to having a UV light system installed in your HVAC. Most importantly, it helps increase the air quality in your home and could keep you healthier by destroying allergens, bacteria, and viruses before they cause issues.

1) Allergens

If someone in your household suffers from allergies or asthma, air quality is extremely important to their quality of life. A UV light system can significantly help with this issue by eradicating common allergens in the duct work. You will notice that it feels easier to breathe and your lungs are less constricted than before.

2) Smells

Not only does the UV light reduce the number of bacteria in the air, but it also reduces smells and odors. As bacteria, viruses, and even mold grows in your HVAC system, it can start to smell bad. Think about the moldy food you found in the back of the refrigerator... gross. Having UV light working for you to keep the air ducts free from contaminants can help improve the smell in your home.

3) Sickness

Are your family members sick all the time? It may be due to a medical condition, but it also could be because of a buildup of bacteria, viruses, and mold in your duct work. Breathing these pathogens in every day is harmful to anyone's health. Your body may get tired of fighting off so many potential illness and infections and become more vulnerable. One sleepless night or one stressful day could be all it takes for your immune system to be overloaded and no longer able to keep up. A UV light system can remove these harmful materials from your air ducts and ease the burden on your body to constantly fight off germs in the air.

How Does UV Light Actually Work?

The UV light rays deactivate bacteria and viruses so that they are no longer able to multiply. That is why this is such an efficient, clean way to improve the air quality in your home. Rather than adding chemicals to the air like other cleaning methods, the UV light destroys any pathogens that it comes into contact with. Because the light remains on 24/7, the air quality in your home is protected at all times. The UV light system is so effective, that some users noticed almost immediately when the light burnt out as the air became less clean.

Watch Out for Carbon Monoxide This Season

In Missouri, heating your home in the winter season is something everyone has to do to stay safe and comfortable in below freezing temperatures. Keeping your home warm can become dangerous if you're not careful and diligent about maintaining your furnace. The furnace, as well as other household appliances, can cause carbon monoxide leaks that could be life threatening to you and your family. Royal Heating & Air is the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, so we are brining you important tips on how to stay safe. Keep reading to learn all about carbon monoxide and how you can prevent this dangerous substance from threatening your family!

What Is It?

Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that is less dense than air. Many furnaces are fuel-burning, which is a process that produces carbon monoxide. If your system is malfunctioning or has a leak, then the carbon monoxide can seep into your home and cause very serious problems, even death. Once it enters your home, you are susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning. The carbon monoxide gas can fill your lungs and prevent you from being able to breathe the oxygen that you need. Many people don't realize they have a leak in their home because it doesn't have an odor. As a result, your symptoms may be the only clue that you have a problem.

What are the Symptoms?

  • A dull headache
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Confusion
  • Blurred Vision
  • Loss of consciousness
If you are experiencing this symptoms and suspect you may have a carbon monoxide leak in your home, leave the house immediately and call 911. Get outside so your lungs can breathe fresh, oxygenated air again and expel any carbon monoxide you may have inhaled. It's important that everyone in the home evacuate the house as well, including pets. If your exposure was extensive enough, you may require hospitalization. Investing in a carbon monoxide detector is a great idea to keep your family safe from this kind of emergency.

Do I Have a Leak?

If you are unsure whether or not your home has a carbon monoxide leak, we recommend you leave your home immediately. If you have severe symptoms, call 911. If you are not having symptoms but suspect you may have a leak, you can give us a call. We can come inspect your equipment to ensure it is operating correctly. If you notice stains, soot, or discoloration on or around your boiler, fireplace, or water heater - call us! It could mean you have a leak. Check your boiler or any other area that has a gas flame. If it normally burns blue and the flame is now yellow or orange, you could have a carbon monoxide leak.

Staying ahead of a leak is crucial. It is a silent killer. Regular inspections and paying attention to your equipment can help prevent potential dangers in your home. If you want peace of mind, give us a call and we will be more than happy to look over your HVAC equipment to make sure it is running properly.

Preventing a Leak

One of the most important measures you can take to prevent a carbon monoxide leak is regular maintenance. We recommend having your HVAC unit checked every spring and fall to make sure your equipment is operating efficiently without leaks. Regular HVAC maintenance is a great way to catch any leaks before they become fatal. It is also recommended to have your fireplace inspected every year. Your fireplace can be a potential source of carbon monoxide. If your chimney has a blocked flue it can trap the carbon monoxide produced from burning, causing your home to accumulate dangerous levels. You can also install a carbon monoxide detector in your home. Detectors are a great tool to use in addition to regular inspections. Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed on every floor of your home at least five feet off the ground. If possible, install one near every sleeping area.

HVAC at the Lake of the Ozarks

Royal Heating & Air is here for you in every season. This winter, if you are concerned about whether or not your furnace is running correctly, give us a call! We can come help make sure everything is running smoothly to help reduce the risk of carbon monoxide leaks.

Why Custom Ductwork is a Must in New Construction!

If you're building your dream home, it's important to make sure it is going to be comfortable year-round! Whether the weather is hot and muggy or freezing cold, Royal Heating & Air can help you maintain a comfortable home with professional, custom ductwork and the best heating and cooling systems at the Lake of the Ozarks. Custom ductwork is the best way to ensure efficient airflow throughout the house. Keep reading to learn how!

Custom-Made For Your Home

When you hire a professional to create custom ductwork, they will create it to be perfectly suited for your HVAC system and your home. Your fabricator will ensure that your home receives the proper air load. They will also create the ducts to have the straightest route from your air handler to a given room. If your ductwork has too many turns, it can make it harder for your system to deliver the necessary air flow to your living spaces. They will also create a matching return duct for every supply register. Having matching supply and return ducts helps optimize the circulation in your home. The most important part of custom sheet metal ducts is that they are properly sealed, which prevents air loss and helps increase energy efficiency and indoor air quality, ultimately putting less stress on your system.

Increased Performance

With ductwork that's custom-made for your home, you'll have better overall performance for your HVAC system. The improvement in airflow will help regulate temperatures in rooms throughout the home. Keeping the temperature constant with fewer temperature swings prevents your system from overworking itself. This can be especially beneficial for upstairs rooms or other rooms that typically get hotter or colder than others. Controlled temperatures throughout your home not only increase the performance of your system, but also promote a longer life for your HVAC system.

Improved Efficiency

With custom ductwork, air can travel through the ducts more easily and without interruptions. Greater efficiency means that hot or cold air will travel through your ductwork without losing energy. This improved efficiency not only reduces a significant amount of waste, it can also save you money on your monthly energy bills. Proper ductwork, designed specifically for your home, keeps your HVAC system working more efficiently and at a lower cost.

Better Air Balance & Flow

One of the biggest issues with ductwork is poor installation. If typical, pre-made ductwork is installed in your home, it may be forcefully shoved into place, which can cause pinching or collapsing. These problems can seriously interfere with the system’s air balance and flow. Getting ductwork custom-designed for your home's specific measurements ensures that air flows without any hindrances. It will also help make sure that the air moving through your ducts gets to your rooms via the shortest possible path. With custom ductwork, you can rest assured that your system is perfectly balanced.

Custom ductwork and sheet metal fabrication can help make your home more efficient and comfortable year-round. This is important in climates like Missouri where the weather can change day-to-day. If you are remodeling your house or building the home of your dreams, now is the perfect time to get a consultation for custom ductwork from Royal Heating & Air. We are here for you and your comfort at home!

Improve HVAC for Better Sleep!

Getting enough high-quality sleep is important to overall health. Royal Heating & Air prioritizes your comfort and health, using our extensive HVAC expertise. Today we have several tips on how to improve your HVAC system and habits to help you sleep better. Keep reading to learn important factors that affect the quality of sleep and how we can help!

Temperature

Do you feel more comfortable sleeping at a cooler temperature than normal? You're not alone! Most people sleep better in a cooler room, as body temperature tends to lower a couple of degrees at night as it prepares to sleep. The ideal temperature range for sleeping is 60-68 degrees Fahrenheit. This is why, in the summer, it's important to have your air conditioner serviced so that it is in top-notch condition and able to keep you cool and comfortable all night long.

Air Quality

Indoor air quality is a hot topic, and a very important one. As a society, we spend a lot of time inside, especially in the winter season. It's important that the air we breathe be clean and fresh to help promote our health rather than hinder it. Keep the air in your house clean by dusting and vacuuming, changing the air filter regularly, scheduling HVAC checks, and installing a UV light system in the ductwork to destroy bacteria and other harmful materials.

Humidity

The humidity levels in the air can greatly affect how comfortable you are, day and night. If the air feels too dry, then your skin, sinuses, and airways can also become too dry. Dry air can also feel cooler and cause you to turn the heat up higher than necessary. Royal Heating & Air can help with a whole-home humidifier to keep the house comfortable all season long.

Learn All About Mini-Split Systems!

HVAC systems are an incredibly important part of being comfortable at home. There are a lot of choices when it comes to how to heat and cool your home. As the best HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks, Royal Heating & Air knows the pros and cons of the various types of systems you can choose from. Keep reading to learn about one of these great options - a mini-split system!

What is a Mini-Split System?

A mini-split system is comprised of an indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor. During the summer, the indoor unit pulls in the warm air from the house and then blows it over cold evaporator coils. The heat absorbed by the coils is brought to the outside unit and released there, away from your home.

Regular HVAC systems function almost the same way, but in a longer and less efficient process. The air is pulled through duct work to the indoor unit that is typically tucked away somewhere in the home. It is cooled by the same process there and then pushed back out through duct work to the rooms in your house.

PRO: Mini-Splits are Efficient

Mini-splits are more efficient than central heating and cooling units because they are cooling the room where they are located. The air doesn't have to travel long distances through duct work and use up energy.

CON: Not Aesthetically Pleasing

Some people are concerned that the mini-split system won't fit well in their home because the indoor units have to be located somewhere visible and they cannot be covered up. Most buyers, however, don't notice the units after they have been installed and enjoy the convenience and efficiency they bring.

PRO: You Have More Control

This system allows you to control the feel of each room of your home with the ideal temperature for that space. With a big home, this can be especially convenient. Leave the less-visited areas of your home one temperature, while keeping the areas where you spend most of your time at another.

CON: Requires More Maintenance

Mini-split systems do require more maintenance than central HVAC systems. The filters have to be washed out monthly or the system could fail and require hundreds of dollars of repairs.

PRO: No Duct Work Necessary

If your home currently has window units and you are looking for a better, more efficient system, a mini-split is a great choice. The installation is relatively simple, only requiring a small hole to connect to the outdoor unit.

CON: High Upfront Cost

The upfront cost for a mini-split system can sometimes be higher than a central HVAC unit. (This does not include new duct work.) While it can save you money in the long term, it could be important to do some calculations on how the costs will add up and whether or not it's the right choice for you.
